One of the key things about the whole Electra Heart project is the visuals and artwork, and there is a clear theme developed throughout all the imagery, a theme of faded glamour and stylised grandeur with Marina prominent throughout. It is her direction and influence that runs through all the imagery, she says: " I just took a lot of care with the visual side of things. It's not an alter ego. It's how an actor plays a part, a character they're playing. Whatever is happening to me is happening to her, because I am her. Though I definitely meant what I said about Electra Heart being the antithesis of me, it's not as primitive as that. The whole concept was inspired by realising an Aristotle book called Poetics.* It's about analysing Greek Tragedy, and I saw so many parallels between that and Hollywood that I realised old Hollywood is our modern-day mythology, people like Marilyn and Elvis. It's more about discovering a glittering underbelly of American society than, 'Oh, woe is me, I tried to get famous and it didn't work out how I thought, people CRITISED ME.' ❞ At some point Marina then intended to do a side project under the name "Electra Heart," [6] when she was told by her manager it wasn't possible, [7] she merged the projects.
