The Labord’s chameleon is from southwestern Madagascar. This species is distinguished by having the shortest lifespan of any four-legged vertebrate. Once it hatches, this chameleon lives for about 4 to 5 months. Lesser ChameleonThe elastic recoil of a chameleon’s tongue propels them to accelerate the tongue to reach 100 km/hour in 1/100 of a second. This amounts to over 41 g, the highest acceleration of any reptile, bird, or mammal and over four times that of an F16 fighter jet. It can also extend to over double the length of the chameleon’s body. A modified hyoid bone has an extended entoglossal process, and the accelerator muscles are wrapped around this at rest. When these muscles contract, they squeeze structures known as intralingual sheets which shoot out like an unfolding telescope. The first section of this guide will explore chameleon species that are kept as pets. After that, wild species will be categorized by genus. Pet Chameleon Species Certain species of chameleons have bones that glow when under ultraviolet light, also known as biogenic fluorescence. [25] Some 31 different species of Calumma chameleons, all native to Madagascar, displayed this fluorescence in CT scans. [51] The bones emitted a bright blue glow and could even shine through the chameleon's four layers of skin. [51] The face was found to have a different glow, appearing as dots otherwise known as tubercles on facial bones. [25] The glow results from proteins, pigments, chitin, and other materials that make up a chameleon's skeleton, [25] possibly giving chameleons a secondary signaling system that does not interfere with their color-changing ability, and may have evolved from sexual selection. [25] Distribution and habitat Brookesia minima, Lokobe Strict Reserve. The 30 species of chameleons in the genus Brookesia are tiny, usually brown-colored and mainly terrestrial. One of the smallest four-legged animals in the world, this species is one of the more recently discovered among chameleons. Name for the Nosy Be Forest (??) in which it is found, and the most distinguishing feature of this forest-dwelling chameleon is its tiny stature. Nosy Be pygmy chameleons grow to be only ½ inch to just over an inch tall. Antongil Leaf Chameleon Also distinguished by their minimal size, Antongil Leaf chameleons are from northeastern Madagascar. As a result of deforestation, populations of this species have become smaller and more fragmented. Because of this, they are considered endangered. Armored Leaf Chameleon

The chameleon was featured in Conrad Gessner's Historia animalium (1563), copied from De aquatilibus (1553) by Pierre Belon. [70] This species is found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and, of course, Senegal. It is usually olive colored, and about 9 or so inches in length. In this species, the female is generally larger than the male. Tiger Chameleon

Also, we provide them with a basking spot of 89 to 95 degrees per panther chameleon enclosure. Night time chameleon temperatures are 72 to 76 degrees. a b c Higham, T. E.; Anderson, C. V. Unusually, chameleons have a negative (concave) lens, but their corneas are positive (convex), which allows them to focus their depth perception precisely. This also makes them the only vertebrate in the world that can focus monocularly, and they do not need both eyes to be looking at the same point to gauge depth. So acute is their daylight vision that they have no rod cells at all, making them effectively blind at night. Another three-horned variety, the Johnston’s chameleon is sometimes called the Ruwenzori chameleon. It is native to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Though they are sometimes sold as pets, they are not as readily available as some other pet chameleon species. Meller’s Chameleon Daza, Juan D.; Stanley, Edward L.; Wagner, Philipp; etal. (2016).
