Auto Light Correction (RightLight 4): RightLight 4 video lighting technology automatically adjusts to the lighting in your environment, so you can be seen clearly even in low light Logitech is the biggest name in consumer webcams and has been for a long time. The company has managed to retain this status throughout the COVID-inspired work-from-home revolution, even without updating many of its most popular webcams. For years, the Logitech c920 series has set the standard for dedicated webcams in terms of image quality, features, and configuration software—until this month, that is, when Logitech released a new 1080p webcam, the Logitech Brio 500. The Brio 500 is certified for software like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet, and I had zero issues with those platforms when video calling for business or pleasure. The clarity of the picture, however, does take a hit, depending on the platform. On Zoom, the video quality was top-notch, but on Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, there were moments when the video looked a bit fuzzy. I blame this on the platforms themselves (or my Wi-Fi connection), as when I tested the camera in other settings, the Brio 500 was a heavy hitter---the video quality was nearly perfect every time.

The Brio 500 technically does offer a couple of straight-up quality “upgrades” over the c920 series. It’s a 4-megapixel camera, up from 3MP on the c922 Pro, which theoretically improves image quality in photos, though I doubt you’ll notice a difference in most situations. The stereo microphones now feature beamforming technology, which can specifically target the person in front of the camera and reduce the amount of ambient noise coming through. In a self-administered trial, I found that the mic did sound slightly more clear than my c922 Pro. Widening the field (of view) The Logitech Brio 500 is a higher quality, ultra-wide camera. With this in mind though, the output that the Brio 500 provides is crisp and detailed, with balanced light levels that don’t feel too under or over exposed. The addition of HDR is a welcome one, although it doesn’t accentuate detail or the overall image as much as I initially expected, leading images to look a little flatter than other webcams I’ve used. The auto-framing feature, centers the camera on you, even as you move around during meetings. This allows you to stand up or move around without worrying about leaving the frame. I personally have this feature turned off.

Show Mode: Present your work or other objects on your desk with Show Mode, which lets you tilt the web camera up or down with one hand The mounting clip provided is secure, and general setup is easy. The Brio 500 is also plug and play, working with no additional drivers required. The Brio 500 also comes with quite a long 1.5m cable, meaning you have a fair amount of cable-based freedom for where you want to place the webcam. I’m in love with how the Logitech Brio 500 looks. It features this sleek, spectacled design that’s unlike any other webcam I’ve seen, proving that even some of the least exciting office peripherals can look great. In use, I was pleased to see that the video quality was on point. My face looked clear, sharp and well-focused while the colours were bright without being oversaturated even if they could sometimes be a little dull. You could see everything you needed to in the shot whatever the time of day or whatever the weather outside. The Logitech Full HD 1080p Webcam is a versatile and high-quality webcam that is perfect for professionals who need to communicate and collaborate remotely. With advanced image quality, auto light correction, and auto-framing, this webcam provides me with an outstanding video conferencing experience. This has fixed all the audio and camera issues that I face in a year of remote work.

It’s on the point of the Logitech Brio 500 performance where I begin to get a little puzzled. It is, by and large, a solid webcam with good levels of detail and reasonably smooth motion, although it is a bit difficult to see why you’d buy a 1080p/30fps webcam that costs this much when there are zillions of other choices for more reasonable costs. The redesigned Brio 500 camera features an ultra-wide lens with a 90-degree field-of-view, so you can capture a very large area, should you want to capture a group of people, or get a whiteboard in the shot. Using Logitech’s webcam configuration software, Logi Tune, you can automatically adjust the lens to shoot in a 65-, 78-, or 90-degree FOV, and adjust the framing using the camera’s 4x digital zoom. It gives you a lot more flexibility to set exactly what is and isn’t in the frame. The Brio 500 follows the top-level specs of previous mid-to-high-tier webcams. It can record video or livestream in 1080p at 30fps, or 720p at twice the frames. These core specs are identical to the webcam’s predecessor, the Logitech c922 Pro, but that’s OK. While a bump 1080p/60 would have been appreciated for Twitch streaming and other video projects, these settings offer what most video conferencing platforms can handle—Zoom and Microsoft Teams support up to 1080p/30fps, while Google Meet taps out at 720p/30fps. Getting set up with your desktop is just as easy, you literally just need to plug it in using the USB-C cable. My PC automatically found it and got it working. The auto light correction feature works well for me w/ zoom. even in low light environments. The webcam adjusts to the lighting in your environment to provide the best possible image quality. I had severe issues with zoom previously, due to sun and early morning/evening calls. For years, their C920 webcam has flown the flag for solid 1080p webcams for most people, and this new one looks to be one of the first updates to their conferencing lineup for offices for a while. That flexibility also enables an AI-based auto-framing feature called RightSight, which digitally pans and zooms within its ultra-wide view to keep your face in the center of the frame, similar to what Apple, Samsung, and Google have added to their respective phones in recent years. (At the time of this review, RightSight is still in “beta” and won’t be available until around “the end of September.”) RightSight’s adjustability is comparable to those features, in that it works well when framing up a static face, but may not be able to keep up with a moving target. If nothing else, it creates a single-button solution for framing up your webcam before a meeting, rather than dialing in it yourself. Advanced Image Quality: Full HD 1080p webcam resolution provides outstanding image quality so everyone can see you clearly during meetings

Relatively small and lightweight, the webcam weighs 121g and measures 51.5 x 110 x 45 mm which means that while it is noticeable on top of your monitor, it’s not so big that it becomes an eye sore. There are tonnes of possibilities in how you use the camera. For example, you can tilt it to face downwards so you can show items or documents that are laid out on your desk to those on the call. It’s as easy as reaching for the camera and pulling it towards you or pushing it away to show yourself on the screen. The setup couldn’t be simpler, the software is easy to navigate and the array of features made everything fuss-free. My only issue was that the magnet on the camera wasn't quite strong enough but that’s hardly a dealbreaker in an otherwise excellent piece of home office kit. Logitech Brio 500 review: also consider A Full HD webcam that films in 1080p resolution, the Logitech Brio 500 might not deliver the very best image like some top-notch 4K cameras but the quality is still worth writing home about in comparison to most built-in snappers. It has a 4MP lens with the potential for 4x digital zoom and up to a 90° diagonal field of view, and it has autofocus as well. Moreover, it offers an especially wide FOV, the widest being 65 degrees. That’s the one you see in the image of my ugly mug in the photo above. It’s especially handy if you want to show things off in presentations. There are some slightly tighter ones, which would be my preference, but for those wanting a much wider perspective, it’s handy to know the Brio 500 offers this. Auto-Framing (RightSight): Auto-framing (1)(3) centers the video camera on you, allowing you to stand and move during meetings without leaving the frame If you’re after a killer gaming webcam, then I’d recommend taking a look at the Razer Kiyo Pro instead. It’s actually now a little cheaper than the Logitech Brio 500 and is ideal for work calls during the day and streaming your play in the evening. You get a slightly larger field of view than with the Brio although the number of megapixels in the camera itself is slightly lower.
