Description

I really, really loved this. I loved all the characters (except for Elizabeth because she was more selfish and annoying), especially Miaka. I loved Kahlen’s perspective on everything and I loved how she still hadn’t figured herself out after ninety-nine years of life. I loved the concept of this private society of Sirens, and the system they served with the Ocean. Knight, Virginia (1995). The Renewal of Epic: Responses to Homer in the Argonautica of Apollonius. E. J. Brill. p.201. ISBN 9789004329775. The characters were all fun, but they weren’t layered or deep. Which was fine, I think, since that wasn’t a huge part of the story. It felt like the only two main characters were really Kahlen and Akinli, and the Ocean of course. But everyone else was just a side character.

Longworth, T. Clifton, and Paul Tice (2003). A Survey of Sex & Celibacy in Religion. It’s an imaginative, insider’s look at a siren’s life. Tweens and teens will enjoy rooting for Kahlen to find a way to be with her beloved Akinli, and they'll easily relate to her as she rebels against the Ocean's strict demands.

All Kahlen wants from life is to fall in love and get married. If she does, what do you think the rest of her life will be like? It is explained that the siren's "other part" may be "like fish or like bird" in Guillaume le clerc's Old French verse bestiary (1210 or 1211), [100] [95] as well as Philippe de Thaun's Anglo-Norman verse bestiary (c. 1121–1139). We must steer clear of the sirens, their enchanting song, their meadow starred with flowers" is Robert Fagles's rendering of Odyssey 12.158–9. The sirens of Greek mythology first appeared in Homer's Odyssey, where Homer did not provide any physical descriptions, and their visual appearance was left to the readers' imagination. It was Apollonius of Rhodes in Argonautica (3rd century BC) who described the sirens in writing as part woman and part bird. [b] [11] [12] By the 7th century BC, sirens were regularly depicted in art as human-headed birds. [13] They may have been influenced by the ba-bird of Egyptian religion. In early Greek art, the sirens were generally represented as large birds with women's heads, bird feathers and scaly feet. Later depictions shifted to show sirens with human upper bodies and bird legs, with or without wings. They were often shown playing a variety of musical instruments, especially the lyre, kithara, and aulos. I just enjoy books that are in first person and I go understand a little more about what a Siren is and what they do and how they live and such. I couldn’t help rooting for them to be together (which is the point of a romance, but it doesn’t always work for me). They had chemistry, and they understood each other perfectly. It was so much fun to read.

The first-century Roman historian Pliny the Elder discounted sirens as a pure fable, "although Dinon, the father of Clearchus, a celebrated writer, asserts that they exist in India, and that they charm men by their song, and, having first lulled them to sleep, tear them to pieces." They are beautiful and mythical and quite honestly the root of my obsession of fantasy novels and movies. Anyone who knows me knows that, even though I am a poor swinner, I can't get enough of the siren folklore.
