Description

The book was never reprinted because the original plates were destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942 (in the same year Ravilious, who was a captain in the Royal Marines and an official war artist, was killed in action). Its importance in Ravilious’s oeuvre was assured, and a copy was displayed in the memorial exhibition organised by the Arts Council in 1948. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed. Yet, as Richards makes clear, change was already altering the appearance of the high street when the book was published, and this is confirmed by an observant chronicler of London life in the mid 1930s, Thomas Burke. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously.

Some traders transferred their allegiance to the new labour-saving devices, like washing-machines, while others responded to the explosion of interest in home decoration and gardening that accompanied interwar suburban expansion. Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver and remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. In this context the Mainstone Press is pleased to announce the publication of The Story of High Street. His instantly recognisable style, palette and choice of subject have an almost universal appeal, a blend which has increased in popularity with the passing of time, particularly in the first two decades of the 21st century. Eric Ravilious (22 July 1903 – 2 September 1942) was an exceptional watercolourist, wood engraver and designer.

This book has been out of print for many years but we still have the odd studio copy available - usually well loved, with the odd cover scratch, dent and bump. Happily Russell also discovered that two of the businesses are still trading from their original premises.Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver, and he remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was an English artist working as a watercolourist, print maker, wood cutter, designer and book illustrator in between the wars England. First edition, sole impression; 8vo; 24 colour lithograph plates and plain wood-engraved title vignette by Eric Ravilious; publisher's pictorial boards, with the 'transmatic' dust jacket and printed card flaps, a superb copy in the rare cellophane dust-jacket with printed paper flaps, cellophane shrunk as usual with front flap separated, nevertheless a stunning copy of a vulnerable book. The logic of this attitude, played out over the subsequent decades, has brought us to a crisis point.
