Malcolm, David (2002). Understanding Ian McEwan. University of South Carolina Press. ISBN 1570034362 Kellaway, Kate. "Harry Potter goes to China". The Guardian. 23 March 2003. Retrieved 8 September 2010. Archived by WebCite on 11 November 2010. Self-focused daydreaming can be beneficial/positive (i.e. a self-reflection) or detrimental/negative (i.e. a rumination). [15] Rumination is over-thinking negative experiences from the past, and pessimistic views of the future; it generally increases negative mood-episodes, guilt, fear and poor attention controls [13] [15] Self-reflection generally increases happiness, anti-depressant thinking, rational planning, creativity, and positivism. [15] Research [ edit ]

He came down stairs and had a cup of coffee which he disliked but still drank so no one would figure him out. He read the newspaper and talked to his colleagues. It turned out he was a scientist. He saw the med student and felt butterflies in his stomach. The two of them walked to a meadow near a railway tunnel. There they kissed. The next day Peter woke up in his own body. He realized that the grownups had their pleasures but he disliked them for now. He was glad to be an adult for a while. Daydreaming can also be used to reveal personal aspects about an individual. In an experiment directed by Robert Desoille, Desoille had a subject rest on a couch and then invited them to daydream about a series of objects and events. The subjects were asked to imagine a sword or vase first, then to imagine climbing a mountain, and then ascending into space. The subject is then asked to visualize a wizard, a witch, and a dragon. Subjects who imagine more details and sleek objects often see themselves as more useful and hold a belief they are capable of growth. Through the daydream, which can involve many fantastical elements, characteristics such as a fear of men or a desire to subdue a selfish personality trait can be revealed. [20] Can Yaman as Can Divit: General manager, director and head of Fikri Harika agency, Emre's elder brother, Aziz and Hüma's sonSanem is a young woman who aspires to be a writer and live on the Galápagos Islands. [1] Despite working at her father's grocery store, she is forced by her parents to choose between an arranged marriage with her neighbor Muzaffer and finding a suitable job. Sanem lands a job at Fikri Harika, one of Turkey's leading advertising agencies, where Leyla, her sister, is an executive assistant. The owner of the advertising agency, Azizi, has two sons, Emre and Can. Emre wants to take over the company, but his father believes Can is a better fit for the job and he is appointed manager. Can has what his father wants for the company, but he prefers to take photos in remote locations. Upon learning of his father's health problems, Can eventually agrees to run the company. [3] [2] Aziz also tells Can to find the spy in the company who is helping their rival, Aylin. Emre doesn't like the idea of his brother being the manager, and believes that he should have the position. Emre's plan is to make him fail, as well as becoming the spy himself. Sanem bumps into Can on a dark balcony at an opera party celebrating the company's 40th anniversary. Can thinks she is his girlfriend Polen, so he kisses her. Sanem realizes that she loves the stranger who kissed her, and gives him the codename Albatross, but hates Can, and Emre makes her believe that Can only wants to increase the value of the company so that it can be sold. Can soon falls in love with Sanem, and finds out that he kissed her that day at the opera, which begins the inevitable story of love. The decoupling account suggests that attention becomes removed, or decoupled, from perceptual information involving an external task, and couples to an internal process. In this process, TUT is enhanced as internal thoughts are disengaged from surrounding distractions as the participant ‘tunes out’ the surrounding environment. [16] [17] Psychological studies [ edit ] Daydream by Paul César Helleu Can’s younger brother Emre ( Birand Tunca) does not like the idea that his brother would be the manager. He has devoted all his time for the company while his brother Can is abroad. Thus, he believes that he deserves this position more than him. When he learns that his father wants to see Can in this position, he feels devastated and makes a plan to make his brother fail. The negative consequences of daydreaming on reading performance have been studied the most thoroughly. Research shows that there is a negative correlation between daydreaming frequency and reading comprehension performance, specifically worsened item-specific comprehension and model-building ability. [4] Israeli high school students who scored high on the Daydreaming Scale of the IPI had more empathy than students who scored low. Some psychologists use the mental imagery created during their clients' daydreaming to help gain insight into their mental state and make diagnoses. [21] [22] The Daydreamer". ianmcewan.com. day·dream

During daydreams, we are slightly detached from our immediate situation. That can mean we are more receptive to ideas generated within our subconscious. But we shouldn’t take daydreams at face value. Their real meaning is often cryptic and has more to do with ‘trying out’ various courses of action than wanting to be a film star or a neurosurgeon. Although the content of daydreams varies hugely, two common themes are the ‘conquering hero’ and the ‘suffering martyr’. David Malcolm in Understanding Ian McEwan (2002) writes that in the novel Peter, in his unconstrained world, moves between ordinary and impossibly fantastic situations. He compares it to First Love, Last Rites (1975), McEwan's first collection of short stories, because they both contain exciting, frightening, and loose worlds. [5] Reception [ edit ]
