Description

Read by Jayne Entwistle, Kirby Heyborne, Nicholas Guy Smith, Ransom Riggs, Christopher Gebauer, Joe Jameson, Bruce Mann, Arthur Morey, Cassandra Morris and Bahni Turpin I love a good guidebook as much as anyone who’s as obsessed with world building as I am, and this one was really fun! I’d only recommend for diehard fans of the Peculiar Children series, and probably wouldn’t have gone out of my way to read it myself if I hadn’t happened upon it at the library while grabbing the other books. But I loved reading the lore and information about the world simply because I love world building, and the structure of this one made it especially entertaining. The addition of Miss Peregrine’s comments and notes to Jacob made it tie in with the series in a fun way, so I’m glad I read it immediately after finishing the series. Not to say there aren’t pleasures in being peculiar. On the contrary, there are many. But since my sworn duty as an ymbryne is to keep you safe, I do tend to focus on the terrifying and terrible. So long as I’ve got your attention, there are other things you might like to know about who we are and how we live. To survive as a peculiar, you must understand our enemies. But to thrive, you must understandus, and our unique society. Written in Miss Peregrine’s inimitable style, it’s also a dramatic expansion of the universe fans have already come to love, introducing countless new peculiars, enemies, time loops, stories, and secrets, in addition to hundreds of never-before-seen vintage found photographs and select illustrations. Ransom Riggs [is] at the peak of his powers, leaving loyal fans ravenous for more.”–New York Journal of Books

While I did learn some new things in this book, like how they classify peculiars and the history of some of the peculiar events, this was mostly repeated information. I didn't really mind this because it was nice to review some of the history and what has happened. I really liked learning about some important peculiar people and places. It was also fun to read some of the little footnotes.

My favorite part of the story was the short story about Gloria H. The story was depressing yet captivating and I would’ve loved it if there was a full novel dedicated to Gloria’s romance. The peculiar world is so vast and complex that I could easily imagine Ransom Riggs writing peculiar short story collections in the future that revolve around characters like Gloria.
