His eyes identify individual letters on the screen and then, slowly, he builds words to formulate an answer. When he is ready Rob turns to us with a smile. It is his way of letting Lindsey and me know that, while we have been yakking away, he can reply. Rob fixes his gaze on the send button and his texted answer is spoken by an approximation of his voice – recorded during the earliest months of his illness.
