We have a SonicWall as our business router for around 50 ish people. Recently it was getting super slow, and it turns out the fans in it died and it was overheating. I've replaced it with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4, and everything sped right up, and so we now get the speed we're paying for from our ISP. There are many processes/features that can take advantage of the offloading engine. One of the most basic examples isIPv4 traffic forwarding. Without offloading enabled, IPv4 traffic will be routed via the CPU and will be limited to around 300Mbps on the EdgeRouter Lite (ERLite-3). With offloading enabled, the throughput will be about 950Mbps. As we have mentioned in the USG review section, the ER-Lite is exactly the same hardware as the USG, so in this paragraph I will discuss the ER-4 only.

USG is running on EdgeOS software which is a fork of Vyatta’s OS (now owned by Brocade). The same operating system is powering the EdgeRouter devices as well. If you use the default DNS Server (10.8.0.1), you will need to setup a DNS server yourself, instructions are at the end of this article. We recommend instead using an existing DNS server, a publically available DNS server like Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) is the easiest.
