Description

He loves unusual beer, paintball and West Ham United. When Nessa gives birth to their son they name him Neil after Smithy himself and Nessa's father. In the series finale, Smithy stops Nessa's wedding declaring his feelings for her, thus causing Nessa and Dave (Coaches) not to get married. He is shown to have obvious similarities to Nessa, such as: refusing to share food, being very upfront, protective of their best friends, and they like most of the same food and drink, such as KFC, corn on the cob, and Irn-Bru. Smithy wears his heart on his sleeve and is given to intense public displays of emotion, and will cry or sulk with little provocation. Smithy eats, drinks and smokes to excess and is overweight. Ah, Stacey is finally pregnant, having taken 34 pregnancy tests "just to make sure". This is not necessarily unlikely as I neither know nor care about the motility of Gavin's sperm, but it would have been nice for that particularly storyline not to have ended quite so tidily. Happy ever after can have the odd bump in the road, no? Smithy/Nessa update So many funny moments that make Bryn and all his weird quirks so special. I think my fave Bryn moment ever is when he does the trial interview with Stacey for her job. Not sure if that’s because he traumatises her and it brings me joy, or if it’s because it’s hilarious when he calls himself “Declan… McPartlin.” Doris Lucy – Smithy's much younger girlfriend, who is still in secondary school. She is never seen on-screen, and dumps Smithy in Series 2 when he discovers that she has been seeing somebody else. In a running joke meant to illustrate the age gap between her and Smithy, she is often mentioned to be doing activities that would normally be associated with younger people (such as Brownies or trampolining).

Most of the obvious set-piece gags were left behind this week in favour of much more subtle humour, and rightly so. I had a good chortle at Dave Coaches' choice of wedding poem – WH Auden's Funeral Blues – but my biggest laugh was saved for the music played over the wedding montage. Anyone who sat and cried that day in 1987 when Scott and Charlene got married in Neighbours to Angry Anderson's Suddenly will have felt a special moment of nostalgia; everyone else will have been left wondering what on earth that crappy ballad was. This week's Big Questions I honestly dropped my phone on the floor when I realised! My friend Caitlin rang me and was like ‘have you seen, have you seen?’ My friends told me to turn my phone off as my notifications were going mad as it gradually got bigger. As soon as I did is the moment that James Corden decides to retweet me. His reaction has made it all worth it. After all, lots of shows have nice ideas and good actors, but very few of them ignite the nation’s interest to such a degree that two characters get to make a number one single with Tom Jones, while another gets to coach the England football team in a Comic Relief sketch. This is a show that almost everybody seemed to love, and I think a big part of that is the human drama at its core.Bryn is a much-loved character, due to his naivety and generally bubbly nature. He's very caring towards Stacey but has a frosty relationship with his nephew due to a mysterious "fishing trip" incident. Bryn is Stacey's uncle on her dad's side, who passed away sometime before the series starts. Bryn now cares for widowed Gwen and her daughter Stacey. Griff ( Alan David) – friend of Bryn and Doris. He attended Gavin and Stacey's wedding with Doris in Series 1. Gary (Jason Gregg) – A friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He has been friends with them since primary school. He is never seen without his best friend Simon; except for in Series 3, where it appears they have had an argument. Edna Sutcliffe ( Edna Doré) – Pete's mother, only seen once in the Christmas Special, where Pete forgot her and she stayed behind the bar overnight. Doris: “She lives for the day she can change her name from West, what with all the connotations and what have you, and what does she become? A Shipman.”

Are you telling me that the only (openly) gay man we get on Gav and Stace is this boring? Do me a favour. Couldn’t care less tier Owain Hughes

Hi, Morgan! The whole thing is absolutely genius. Where did the idea come around?

Scott – One of Doris' much younger boyfriends, whom she casually describes as "a bit of a pothead". Smithy: “I’ve been thinking about ending it all to be honest, suicide…big time. How many Nurofen would I need to finish me off?” Bryn: “It is, Gavin, it is, provided you remember the one golden rule, and I’ll tell you what, it took me a while to get my head round it. What it is, you have to start everything with ‘w-w-w-dot’. And the best thing to do is to think of something to help remind you, like with me now, I think of ‘whiskey with water’ which was my brother – God rest his soul – my brother’s favourite drink. But it could be anything. I mean, you could say… come on, three w’s. Um… ‘women… wearing wings’. No, don’t say that, that’s a terrible one.”

Less hard-working writers might think that two big comedic characters are enough, but Corden and Jones don’t stop there. Pam, Gavin’s mum, could easily have been a boring side-note. But instead Alison Steadman’s character is a bombastic force of nature, who’d pretend she was a vegetarian if it meant keeping the in-laws happy, mount a protest/BBQ against a pylon being erected, and happily start a race war with the Welsh contingent after a few drinks. She’s paranoid, overly-excitable and utterly hilarious. The brilliance of Doris is the show never overuses her. She comes when she comes, has an iconic scene and leaves us gagging for more. Whether she’s flipping off Jean at the barn dance, “where’s the salad”-ing or singing a timeless rendition of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – Doris is perfect. Rest in peace to a sex positive icon. Dawn and Pete Love him so much, and not to sound like those weird girlies on the internet who never really grew out of their Horrible Histories Mathew Baynton obsession – but he’s so cute. Aw. Not that funny but great in other ways tier Gwen Nessa’s winning advice] “Don’t get me wrong, but to be honest, at the end of the day, when all’s said and done… do you know what I mean?”There are unseen sexual tensions between him and Nessa; they have had several one-night-stands (one of which produced their son), and in some ways, he seems to fancy Nessa. He always seems a bit gutted when she and Dave start dating, especially as he seems to be acting like Baby Neil's father.

And so: a blind date. Again, this is something that happens to a lot of us over the course of our lifetimes. Taking a gamble, putting yourself out there, and putting hope in the universe that the potential romantic pairing will work out for the best. In coming to London in that first episode, Stacey does what all of us have done at some stage by putting her love life in the hands of fate. Fingers ( Samuel Anderson) – A friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He is so named because of his womanizing attitude. He has an on-off relationship with Stacey's friend, Louise. And before you ask, no I don’t (care about Owain Hughes). All of Smithy Gavin’s mates that aren’t Deano Yes! We’re were saying that we’re waiting for people to ask us to do nightclub PAs, dressed as Nessa and Bryn. We’ll be there, we’ll be ready.” Just finally, Christmas is around the corner. Have you started watching the legendary Christmas special again yet? Oh my Christ! If Pam isn’t ranking at the top of your Gavin and Stacey characters tier list, you and me are going to fall out today Michael! Every note of Pam is perfect, and Alison Steadman makes her legendary in every scene. There are too many funny moments to name, but Three Steaks Pam (viz a viz chips) is probs my favourite. I love when she gets sayings wrong (No way, blasé) and I love when she despises Smithy’s mum. She’s a gay icon. Related stories recommended by this writer:
