This Super Ninja FruitFlyTrap is brilliant and works very well on tiny fruit flies – I know it looks large in the picture, but it’s only about 4cm x 4cm in size thereabouts, so is very discrete

The natural liquid only contains food products, is completely non-toxic and is not deadly to fruit flies. The flies die of old age or exhaustion. How to use: The tray at the bottom of the unit collects the dead flies and is easily removed. Shake off the flies, give the tray a wash with soapy water and replace it. The grid at the front of the unit unlatches and swings down if you need to clean inside – except for the electric grid, which is self-cleaning. But, be careful to discharge any resident electricity from the grid before you touch it. Potential benefits: Inexpensive, proven fruit fly attractor, gives rotting fruit a new use Items Needed

A few reviewers reported that fruit flies were able to walk across the surface of the trap “and walk right off.” Pros and Cons of MaxGuard Window Fly Traps Pros When it comes to the build quality, it seems well built, and I’ve had no issues. When it comes to specs, this fly killer is 4000v, and the UV light is an 18W 365nm wavelength UV light. You can replace the bulb, but this is something I have not yet had to do. I also know it’s rated to an IPX4 rating. This means it can be used outdoors but only when protected from rain, either when it isn’t raining, or when it’s placed underneath some sort of shelter, such as a gazebo or parasol. Basically, any location where it is sheltered. Just be aware you can’t leave it out in the rain. To avoid this infestation, try and keep all ripe fruit and vegetables in the fridge. It’s also a good idea to throw overripe food onto the compost heap and immediately pop empty alcohol bottles in your outdoor recycling bin. Wash your fresh produce

However, if you’re someone who piles up a bin like you’re playing a game of Jenga, you might want to take the bins out more regularly. By doing this, you can eliminate the chances of fruit flies entering your home and ultimately laying their eggs in your bins. Every so often, give your bin a good clean with soap and water to eliminate any remaining food residue, too. Yes, we only use biodegradable parts or recycled plastics. But if you’re not someone who likes to get their hands dirty, just make use of your best dishwasher, instead. Take out the bins regularly Because fruit flies are incredibly attracted to the sweet and acidic smell of the vinegar, they’ll make their way into the bowl - without realising that they can’t make their way out. So, they’ll be trapped. What causes a lot of fruit flies in the house? Pro tip: Think throwing away infested produce is enough to get rid of these pests? Think again. Fruit flies can (and will) continue breeding within trash bags, drains and garbage disposals. Be sure to throw away rotten produce before your little friends move in for good. The Method No problem: the liquid is non-toxic and food-grade. And he or she probably won't do it again: it won't be nice. To be sure, let the child drink a lot of water in case the fluid is very old, this dilutes everything. Compare it with apple juice that can go beyond date. This Fenun flycatcher is different in some additional ways from the other models in my review. First up, it doesn’t have a standard plug – you run it through a USB interface. But don’t worry, this flycatcher comes with a 1.3m USB cable and also the adapter to let you plug it into the wall. Or you could run it from your laptop if you’re out camping or even kayaking with a USB power bank.

My anti-fruit fly campaign became a bit of an obsession. I Googled “homemade fruit fly traps” and felt slightly relieved to discover a long list of folk remedies. I put the five most popular recipes—all of which use common household items—to the test. I’d noticed most of the fruit flies were hanging out near the vinegars in my pantry, so I cleared a spot for the traps on the shelf and let them do their thing for about 12 hours. Here’s how each trap fared. The DIY Fruit Fly Traps Trap 1: Rotten FruitIf you are using it in the kitchen, look for a trap in a container to avoid having it spread on surfaces. Fruit flies in your garden call for something more durable and can be left outside. Not only that, it is safe to use because it’s only powered by a USB rechargeable battery so my children, aged 5 and 12 years old can use them. They now also have a newfound respect for electricity safety too. Don’t worry, I made sure they know not to touch the mesh. I have actually touched the mesh, and although I can feel it, it doesn’t hurt or jolt my arm like my mum and dad’s electric fence does when I catch myself against that!

Fruit flies captured: 0 (Fruit flies sure do like the vinegar bottles in my pantry, especially the balsamic. But for some reason, they weren’t attracted when it was served up in a glass.) Trap 4: Dish Soap + Apple Cider Vinegar + Hot Water

Clean up your pots as soon as you’ve eaten,’ explains pest control expert Walter Murphy at PriceYourJob.co.uk. ‘Bits of food that are left on the pots can attract fruit flies. Similarly, sweet drinks and wine in the bottom of glasses can also attract fruit flies, so be sure to wash up as soon as possible and avoid leaving dirty pots around.' All you have to do is place a bowl of apple cider vinegar on the kitchen counter, with cling film over the top. Then, pierce holes in the plastic.
