The UL for vitamin B6 is 100 mg, but the book recommends supplementing up to 150 mg ( https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Vit...). Lara Briden (née Grinevitch, born 1969) is a naturopathic doctor, women’s health speaker, and author of the books Period Repair Manual [1] and Hormone Repair Manual, [2] published by Pan Macmillan. [3] She has consulting rooms in Christchurch, New Zealand, and travels widely to speak on women’s health.

For example, to be able to ovulate, you need to identify the underlying obstacle to ovulation and correct that. Common obstacles include stress, inflammation, thyroid disease, insulin resistance, nutrient deficiency, and/or undereating. Briden, Lara (2022). "Beyond the Label: A Patient-Centred Approach to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome". CAND Journal. 29 (2): 2–8. doi: 10.54434/candj.114. S2CID 250158328 . Retrieved 12 September 2022. Your period is not just your period. It is an expression of your underlying health. When you are healthy, your menstrual cycle will arrive smoothly, regularly, and without symptoms. When you are unhealthy in some way, your cycle will tell the story. After working on Body in Balance with DR Neal Barnard I’ve become interested in hormones (and have sought out other professional opinions re: treatment) Thanks, Dr. Briden, for your clear statement that teens need real periods and not artificial Pill cycles. Period Revolutionary Lara Briden - The Period Revolutionary

In this book we are also shown that the monthly cycle is a report card of our health, and how to understand what the problems in our cycle can tell us about our overall health, and what to do with that information. I have no judgements towards individuals who seek alternative treatments after the traditional medical system has failed them.

Better Birth Control

This book also covers the multiple different kinds of PCOS (admittedly I had no idea there were multiple kinds of PCOS!) and how to treat each one. I am going to guess that this will probably be one of the most formative books I ever read in my life. I don’t know that it’s necessarily the best book out there on the topic, but because it’s the first one for me (you better believe I have like 8 more on hold at the library) it’s the one that is going to shift my thinking the most. A real period is the end result of a series of important hormonal events including ovulation. In contrast, a pill bleed is a withdrawal bleed dictated by the dosing regimen of the drug manufacturer.

Period Repair Manual: Natural Treatment for Better Hormones

Period Repair Manual is published by Pan Macmillan and is your guide to better periods. It explains how to use natural treatments such as diet, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, and bioidentical hormones and provides advice and tips for women of every age and situation. If you have a period (or want a period), then this book is for you.Briden covers many more period complaints and complications, such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause, heavy periods and many others, and with each of these, she prescribes different medicines, such as vitamins and dietary changes, to try and combat the effects the condition is having on the body. For me, much of this didn't apply, but it was interesting to read up on what could help, in that situation. Obviously, in the most severe situation, surgical intervention is probably the only option, and it tends to be the last option that a woman has. This book states that omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in vegetable oils promote inflammatory prostaglandins. This claim is not cited. In fact, omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids have not been shown to cause inflammation in humans (PMID:22889633) or even to increase arachidonic acid (PMID: 21663641). What’s more, a science advisory noted that in human studies, higher levels of omega-6 PUFAs were associated with decreased levels of proinflammatory markers and increased levels of antiinflammatory markers (PMID: 19171857). Magnesium activates vitamin D. Without sufficient magnesium, vitamin D cannot do its job. Conversely, too much vitamin D can cause magnesium deficiency. Why should we have to shut down a woman's entire hormonal system just to accomplish the simple job of preventing pregnancy? Fertility is an expression of health, not a disease to be treated with a drug."
