Difficult to get past my suspicion that the author viewed some ‘characters’ with a degree of disdain.

Unlawful Killings by Her Honour Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC

I like how the author picked the subjects she covers in this book - gang-related violence, stabbings, rape, death by dangerous driving and more, all seem to point to issues that are prevalent in society now and force us to confront the question of what we can do as a society to prevent these crimes from occurring. All too often, we hear screams from social media about the justice system, and how judges are out of touch with real life. With compassion, wisdom, sardonic humour and a novelistic skill with pace and words, this is a breakthrough in expressing heinous crime from the position of one who had the fearful job of ruling upon it. That we should understand the criminals from the lower ranks of society who commit crime and that it’s really our fault in some way for them doing so’ . Wendy Joseph KC From Bard to Bar to Bench: HH Wendy Joseph KC

A stunning book, beautifully written with practical no-mess information regarding the complexities of both the law and its application, and the formalities of court, as well as a insightful and honest opinion of the nature of criminology and society that brings people to the court in the first place. And the fact the mother got a lawyer who is well known for ripping witnesses apart nastily and she was okay with her younger daughter going through that. The English system of criminal justice has developed over centuries to be as fair and robust it can possibly be and it is disturbing to see how recent events and discourse have sought to erode trust in it and the people who work within it. All those moments of lawyerly wrangling that cannot be shared with the jury for fear of prejudicing the outcome. She fears that the progress made on social diversity will go ‘back to how it was, mainly privately educated men, who knew the system and how to talk to people’.

Unlawful Killings by Wendy Joseph — the inside story of six

The breadth of cases examined, from domestic violence, to gang warfare to honour killings are all given the context they deserve rather than going for the headlines.A very good book that takes the reader through the complex world of criminal law and the role of the judge with intellectual clarity and precision. Some of the text is a little dry but personally I can’t see a way in which it could be made more digestible, the author has tried their best. The business of the courtrooms in every Crown Court is almost always open to the public and the press. Honest, sometimes a little shocking, often witty, but ultimately also undeniably tragic - it deals with the outline of half a dozen murder/attempted murder trials so could be little else - it really takes readers behind the scenes of the justice system in the UK, particularly those cases heard in the Old Bailey. I think I'd have liked to have sat on a jury under her watchful eye, but as that is not possible, reading this book has been very satisfying.
