Canary Palm at f/1.8 at 35mm. 24MP DX Nikon D7100, f/1.8 at 1/640 at ISO 100. Camera-original LARGE BASIC JPG (5 MB; the palm isn't flat so much isn't in focus). Sigma stated the "It already was a tough challenge for us to develop a high-spec lens with F1.8 throughout its zoom range. With the EOS 700D, the 18-35mm gives visible flash shadowing at the bottom of the frame at 18mm and ~2m subject distance. But it's not too severe, and can be avoided by zooming in to just 20mm. The Sigma 18-35 has an attractive, clean, slender, smooth design that, if I haven't made it clear already, I like a lot. As good as the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 may be for video on the R5, it does come with a few downsides to be aware of. Size and weight

Sigma has a long history as a lens maker, having been founded over 50 years ago. In the film era it was best known for relatively inexpensive lenses that undercut the camera makers' own equivalents in terms of price. But this has changed over the part decade or so; while other companies have shifted manufacturing to cheaper locations such as China and Thailand, Sigma has stubbornly refused to move from its factory in Aizu, Japan. This means it can no longer compete in the same way on price alone, and it's therefore switched its focus towards higher-value offerings. That performance is from a very low DPP sharpness setting of "2" – the lowest setting I regularly use with the 60D.The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens is one of the first members of Sigma's Global Vision Lens lineup. a sweet loaner car (my car was in the shop) and this lens needing a workout provided far more motivation than I needed to schedule a day trip to

The f/2.8 zoom lenses with optical stabilization are handholdable in even lower light levels when the subject is not moving. Here is where the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 truly shines on the R5, though at first it may be hard to tell. Focusing is usefully internal and manual focusing is possible when set via the Focus switch on the lens barrel. Full-time manual focus override is also available at any time simply by rotating the focus ring. The lens doesn't change in length when zooming from 18mm to 35mm. Of course with the lens's super-fast aperture, you may not use flash very much at all for indoor shooting. The perspective required for tight 18-35mm portraits make this lens a bad choice for such – unless you want to get "artistic".Being long on the wide end and short on the long end, 18-35mm still works well for many landscape photography uses. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function. Optimizing AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. It also enables full-time manual focusing capability which allows sensible focus adjustment by simply rotating the focus ring. Since thermal shrinkage is low, [TSC] has a high affinity to metal parts ..." and permits size reduction in other mechanical parts including the zoom ring. All of the review-time-current Sigma Global Vision lenses have a really nice physical appearance with a feel that at least equals the look. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, can be detected in some shots, but they are not very prominent at all.

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon, Pentax, Sony/Minolta and Sigma mounts. Stopping down to f/2.8 will improve sharpness modestly, but you are going to have difficulty seeing the f/2.8 to f/4 difference in your images. This lens has barrel distortion at 18mm, but it performs better than many similar lenses by showing only a modest amount. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. In the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM lens, Sigma employed an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades, which has resulted in very nice bokeh in our view. We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal. Sigma uses crappy caps. Leave them in the box for resale, and buy the real Nikon or Canon caps to use with this lens instead.Cameras Mirrorless Cameras DSLR Cameras Digital Compact Cameras Video Cameras Lenses Mirrorless Camera Lenses DSLR Lenses Lens Filters Lens Accessories My APS-C format general purpose lens minimum focal length range recommendation is 18-45mm, which relates to 28.8-72mm in full frame format. Coma ( saggital coma flare) often causes weird smeared blobs to appear around bright points of light in the corners of fast or wide lenses at large apertures. In lenses that have it, coma goes away as stopped down.

I've had the 18-35 mounted to my 60D and available for immediate use since it arrived over two weeks ago. That this lens does not meet my minimal focal length range desires for a general purpose lens is going to be overlooked by most – What makes a standard lens ideal for you? Certain important qualities are required, such as fast maximum aperture, versatility for snap shots, portraiture and indoor photography plus a good combination of a wide range of focal lengths in a compact design. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is the first zoom lens ever to achieve a maximum aperture of f1.8 throughout the zoom range. It is a wide aperture, standard zoom-lens for digital single lens reflex camera's with APS-C size sensor's. *1The lens has a focal range equivalent to 27mm - 52.5mm in a 35mm format and it can cover the angles of view of multiple fixed focal length lenses. This wide aperture, standard zoom lens enables the photographer to expand creative possibilities on any occasion. Unlike a prime lens with a single focal length, the Sigma is variable. You may zoom in-and-out without physically moving your camera setup. This offers greater flexibility, speed and creative control when composing a shot — especially when mounted on a tripod. I'd much rather use an image stabilized 18-55mm lens which is smaller and lighter and has a broader zoom range and adds IS or VR for even better results in the dark, and if I'm snapping family photos in the dark, I much prefer my smaller and lighter

The Sigma 18-35mm feels like two or three prime lenses in one variable zoom, which makes it a great all-around video lens. Memory Cards & Storage SD Cards Micro SD cards CFexpress cards Compact Flash and CFast cards Card Readers SSD and USB Drives Scanners The other limitation I see in the 18-35 f/1.8 is the limited focal length range relative to the other APS-C-only 17 or 18mm to something zoom lenses. Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX for a fraction of the price. On Canon, the classic professional Canon 35mm f/1.4 L is a steal today, and a much better long-term investment than this consumer zoom.
