I really enjoyed this dark and twisted gothic novel. It was deliciously creepy and there was a strong sense of foreboding that resonated throughout the whole story. Claimants must be issued a formal warning and offered a new appointment or extension before the withdrawal process starts. But charities have raised concerns about botched communications and low financial support leaving asylum seekers struggling to travel to appointments.

Dennis Heimline: Previous patient of Brookline Asylum who was a serial killer called the "Sculptor" because he posed his victims with ropes and wires. He was "cured" then disappeared after the asylum was shut down. I found the gothic setting very atmospheric and with the vivid descriptions of the staff and the sights, sounds and smells, it was easy to imagine life in the Victorian asylums. I truly felt sorry for the patients but although there were evident improvements from the late 19th century conditions, life was still brutal and the treatments offered barbaric.

Another undoubtedly lousy aspect was the romance. There is not the slightest layer of depth. Instant love really does not go well with underdeveloped characters and childish chemistry. And by childish I mean utterly awkward and laaaaame. I've barely even thought about Oliver and Sabrina since I read Catacomb, but hearing their tragedies told like this, knowing how they became who they were, and that ending... In The Scarlets, Cal is drawn into New Hampshire College’s twisted secret society—one with a deadly initiation.

The Warden (Daniel Crawford): He was the warden at Brookline when it was an asylum. His experiments focused on immortality and he was focused on spreading his "legacy". Instead I get that he instantly makes friends with two other people Jordan his roommate and Abby his supposed love interest. So as the story goes on it is not made clear whether or not these three are related to things until the middle of the book. That is when we find out the three of then are related to this Asylum that is their dorm. Then things went a little south for me from there but I kept reading because I was like okay everything is going to come into place but it just didn't do it for me. So I finished it and I have decided that yes this was not a book for me but others may love it like it or hate it. It was okay to read but I loved the pictures and hopefully there is going to be a sequel because I had more questions than answers. The number for July to September then drops to 223 but an accompanying Home Office note on the stats suggests this is likely to be artificially low.

For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, New Hampshire College Prep is more than a summer program—it's a lifeline. An outcast at his high school, Dan is excited to finally make some friends in his last summer before college. But when he arrives at the program, Dan learns that his dorm for the summer used to be a sanatorium, more commonly known as an asylum. And not just any asylum—a last resort for the criminally insane. I loved this - absolutely flew through it! I was initially concerned with it being set in 1906 as I don't always get on with the classics and the style of writing associated with them, but it was an unfounded fear as for the most part I forgot the book was set in the past. I loved seeing Maud's story unwind and while I had a couple of ideas about what was going on - it didn't deter from my enjoyment when they turned out to be correct. Enjoyable thriller with a neat, wrapped up ending. I highly recommend Asylum if you want to fall asleep in the middle of the day- which mind you, I haven't done since I was 4 years old, and well, now. This book certainly comes with a lot of nostalgic moments, including a writing style that's vehemently juvenile. But of course, read this book if you're feeling lazy, and don't want to use your brain as Asylum does a perfect job in these two areas. Apart from that, Asylum was flawed in most other aspect which is re-assuredly much more important than a middle-of-day snooze and no-brainer read.

Sweet Bells Jangled Out of Tune: A History of the Sussex Lunatic Asylum (St. Francis Hospital, Haywards Heath) Thank you HarperCollins Australia for sending me this copy. No compensation was given or taken to alter this review.

The Asylum is a bleak and gripping thriller, with the narrative alternating between the present day and Maud’s memories while under hypnosis. I just couldn’t put this book down – it’s such an unusual story and I was really rooting for Maud to discover the truth about her life. In the spring of 1968, Nurse Jocelyn Ash and friend Madge make the long journey to Brookline Mental Hospital, and right away, Warden Daniel Crawford takes an interest in bright, caring Jocelyn. Cal Erikson, the boat shoe-wearing prettyboy from Sanctum wasn't always the aggressive, brash antagonist we met in that book. This means any applicant whose appeal was withdrawn in this way – including those who have had their application withdrawn by mistake – would not have been able to be provide their informed consent before the application was withdrawn. First of all, the author is taking two barely even sub-characters and trying to inject personalities into them they CLEARLY did not have in the previous books. Then adding in a sprinkling of some Easter eggs that really don’t add anything to the overall story. So mee-maw worked at the asylum? Cool beans. Just one question though, why the f*** does Dan see ghosts when the lore establishes there are no ghosts within this universe?!?!?! What up with the visions?!? How come Abby hears things sometimes but Jordan’s pretty much unfazed once he leaves Brookline? These are the things I want to know! The books feature a written story accompanied by photographs that the series' characters uncover during the course of the story.
