Description

Appropriately, Pushead's "The Wave" is featured on the cover of this compilation as it was the release of this CD that enabled the Misfits to bid farewell to their contractual obligations to Roadrunner records. The unmistakably Pus'ed out ghouls waved a fiendish goodbye to label executives as the band's long requested termination of their recording contract was finally at hand. Dig Up Her Bones” marked the first official music video ever from the legendary Misfits and debuted on MTV’s 120 minutes. The video repeated on MTV several times in addition to being featured on the Sci-Fi channel. The first US pressing, (as well as the Italian issued import), of the 1982 released LP featured a pink logo and pink cover. The second pressing introduced the purple cover commonly known today. When the album was reissued in 1988, the logo was switched to green and has remained that way since. In connection with the 1988 re-release, Warner Brothers circulated promotional copies of album in custom printed Misfits Halloween bags that have become collector items themselves. It’s estimated that approx. 3,000 of the promo Halloween bags were circulated in 1988. Static Age was originally slated for release on CD in 1995 but delayed. Promo posters were printed advertising, “The Static Age is “Coming Halloween 1995”. A small percentage of these posters were given to the Misfits and the majority destroyed by Caroline Records. At the time, former frontman and Misfits co-founder Glenn Danzig informed the source reels for the album could not be found, refusing participation in the release of “Static Age” as well as the Misfits 4-disc “Box Set”. Walk Among Us” is widely known by fans as the definitive Misfits album. By the time of these recordings, the band had honed their sound and image entirely. “Walk Among Us” truly portrays the Misfits in their fully realized state. The album is still in print and widely available on CD through Rhino/Warner Bros.

Project 1950 was the first full-length release from the newly launched indie label “Misfits Records” and the first to be distributed under the deal with Rykodisc (now Rykodisc/Warner Bros) as exclusive distributor. A limited edition blue vinyl 45 and promotional CD single were issued for the first single “Dig Up Her Bones”. The first LP pressing in ‘83 included approx. 1,000 colored vinyl LPs estimated at 100 green, 500 yellow, 200 purple and 200 clear vinyl (most with colored swirls). not long after that, i found a 12" bootleg of "Beware" and even for a raw needle-drop from a source with notable surface noise, it totally blew away any other versions of those songs i ever heard before.

The cover artwork by the late Mad Marc Rude depicts all four band members as ghouls amidst non-descript zombies and monsters. The band members are depicted with green eyes from left to right, Doyle, Jerry Only (front/center), Glenn Danzig and Robo. The original Misfits broke up in October 1983, having released several 7" singles and 12" records, all of which were DIY limited-edition and most of which were hand-assembled by the band, that have long been considered prime collectors' items. The bulk of the band's material was released on Glenn's Plan 9 label. The band's popularity grew exponentially following their split and their material and tapes of their live shows were heavily bootlegged.

Fiend Facts: Although 1978’s “Static Age” is the first full-length album ever recorded by the Misfits, it remained unreleased in its entirety until nearly two decades later. The album finally received its debut in 1996 in the Misfits Box Set.

Fiend Facts: North American & European pressings of Misfits Project 1950 include the above-mentioned bonus DVD but the Japanese pressing does not. The CD distributed by Video Arts in Japan included a rare limited edition 5” vinyl record of the Misfits studio version of “Day the Earth Caught Fire” (on Side A) and an unreleased live recording of Jerry Only performing the song with Balzac in concert in Japan (on Side B). In it’s initial release on LP and cassette in 1985, 1,000 copies were pressed in colored vinyl (500 red vinyl LPs and 500 white vinyl LPs). Legend has it that as a result of not cleaning the stampers during the color switch in the pressing plant, a small percentage of the 1,000 colored vinyl LPs (rumored to be 16 pcs) include various shades of pink.

For more in-depth info on the history of the “Static Age” album, please see the “Static Age” entry of this discography (above). The first CD release was issued in 1992 by Caroline Records as a limited edition Gold CD (estimated at 15,000 copies). Caroline had continually reissued the album in LP and cassette format since its debut.Limited edition colored vinyl LPs were also released. In North America, the first LP pressing was a limited edition of 1,000 pcs on 100-gram solid blue vinyl. The second pressing on 100 gram PURPLE vinyl was also limited to 1,000 pcs. Both pressings are sold out and long out of print. Evilive was originally a 7-inch EP containing 7 songs released in 1982 on Plan 9 Records exclusively through the Fiend Club and ultimately available in 5 different picture sleeves. Static Age” was recorded in 1978 utilizing free studio time provided by Mercury Records. Mercury and the Misfits were both using the name “Blank Records” at the time, (Mercury as an imprint for Pere Ubu and the Misfits as their imprint for the '77 debut single “Cough Cool”). Mercury wanted full ownership of the “Blank” name and offered a barter deal. The Misfits agreed, gave up the “Blank” name to Mercury in exchange for 30 hours of free studio time and the “Static Age” soon began.
