Description

Anavilhanas – Islands in the Stream, the archipelago between 350 and 450 islands of every ilmaginable shape emerging from the dark waters of the Rio Negro. Photographs Dedicated to Indigenous Populations This talk took place earlier this year as part of Photo London’s Book Club live events, to coincide with the UK launch of Salgado’s ‘Amazônia’ book published by TASCHEN. Free for children up to 5 years, ICOM members with valid membership card, licensed tourist guides, persons accompanying disabled visitors, staff of the Special Projects Unit and Fabbrica del Vapore, accredited journalists with valid press card, 1 group accompanying person, teachers accompanying schools (2 per group), invitation coupon holders. The Science Museum is open Wednesday – Sunday from 10.00 until 18.00. During school holidays the museum is open seven days a week.

That riverboat journey was an attempt – doomed as it turned out – to find the source of one of Amazônia’s rivers, as well as a chance to take photographs of riverbanks that look like huge walls of trees. But to reach his ultimate destination, the communities who live deep in the forest, Salgado needed to navigate smaller streams in narrower boats. His book contains a shot of 10 or so small vessels moored at daybreak: dark and sharply focused, they stand out from the misty, featureless landscape behind, their seats catching the morning sun and shining silver. Whose are they? The exhibition is supported by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Principal Sponsor) and Natura &Co (Major Sponsor).

This exhibition contains nudity and content that some visitors might find challenging. Further information is available at www.zurich.com . About Natura &Co: Mountains– Brazil also boasts mountain ranges, which feature peaks shrouded in mist and rainforest-covered lower slopes. Instituto Terra was founded by the Salgados in 1998 on degraded land previously farmed by the family. Over twenty years, they have slowly regrown part of the Atlantic Forest. Visitors will see photographs documenting the reforesting they have achieved and hear from staff at the Instituto about their work. T he Instituto now provides a home for endangered species, raises millions of tree seedlings in its nursery every year, and trains young ecologists to help protect the region’s biodiversity for generations to come. With over 200 photographs the exhibition revolves around two themes: images of landscape settings, and of indigenous peoples.
