Description

It never occurs to him to strike out on his own, rather than letting circumstances just carry him along. Instead of learning how to turn mice into toads for the witch's brew, Gobbolino sets out on an adventure to find a family and a home of his own.

Gobbolino tries to adjust to his life in the cave but fails to complete a single task set by his mistress. First published in 1942, Gobbolino the Witch's Cat continues to delight children - a true modern classic. With lots of fairly short episodes, it will make a good bedtime series for several nights, and even lead to discussions about differing beliefs, about witches and treating others with kindness.

Una however loved it and summed up the plot to Martin "It's about a cat and he just wants to be a kitchen cat but it isn't fair because nobody understands him.

He doesn't look the part of a witch's cat either, he is dark tabby rather than black, he has one white paw and blue eyes so he gets abandoned by the witch after she can't find another witch to take him on, and Gobbolino is alone in the world. He escapes to look for a kitchen home but is distrusted everywhere he goes and blamed for mysterious happenings, such as the farmer's milk turning sour and the orphanage children's gruel turning into chocolate. Being so kind-hearted and not keen to perform spells and magic tricks, he gets abandoned by his mistress witch and sets off on a series of adventures to find his fortune elsewhere. He leaves and is adopted by a woodcutter, but the woodcutter's great-granddaughter sells him to a pedlar-woman for a dress.I bought this book so that I could read it to my children, and hope that they would love it as much as I did as a child.

Although it is quite a long book for a younger audience, each chapter is a like a mini story so children could dip in and out of it because they would not have to remember what happened before to understand the entire story. Gobbolino, a witch's feline endowed with unusual powers, is a charming little kitten who faces an identity crisis. C. Westcott, and has been very popular in primary school music classes in Australia and New Zealand since appearing as song 9 on page 12 of the 1978 edition of Sing, [3] a music curriculum programme of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that included a radio programme, cassettes (now CDs) and an annual compilation of songs. Like many good children's tales, the story of Gobbolino will give younger readers cheers and make them wonder. He tries to be a normal kitchen cat, first at a farm, then an orphanage, then the mayor's house, but his magic always gets him into trouble.

A story book I'll share as it think it's a wonderful story to be read aloud on a dark stormy bedtime!
