If you’re looking to find one of the best 4K projectorsout there, but don't want to spend the exorbitant sums that top-tier models from JVC and Sony command, look no further than the Epson Pro Cinema LS12000. This machine uses a laser light engine to shine an almost unbeatable image, making it a perfect choice for watching movies at home on a wall-mounted projection screen. There are two key projection technologies. DLP models use a digital micromirror device (DMD) allied to a spinning colour wheel to create images. They tend to be competitively priced and because they use a single device, can deliver very sharp pictures. However, that colour wheel can cause an artifact known as rainbow fringing (particularly on cheaper models), where colour flashes can be seen in areas of high contrast. If you specialize in monochrome, they may not be the best choice. Bigger spenders should consider the laser projectors in this guide, as they offer more vivid and consistent colour over a longer period of time (over 20,000 hours). The technology is more pricey, though is generally used in top-range, home cinema models. Best projector: DLP or 3LCD?

The NZ8 is undoubtedly expensive, but the pricing of JVC’s new line-up is intended to reflect the comparative cost of 4K laser projectors from Sony. Interestingly the NZ8 currently has no direct competitor, so if you want uncompromising performance, peerless HDR tone mapping, comprehensive features and a high degree of future-proofing performance, this remarkable projector is in a class of its own. The Premiere LSP9T’s built-in sound system impresses in a number of ways. First, the distance the beam-based speaker system casts the sound away from the projector’s chassis is remarkable. As a result, the sound never seems to actually be coming from the physical location of the speakers on the LSP9T’s rear. The effect is closer to a wall of sound, complete with significant height and width, that seems to elevate everything to match the position of the onscreen pictures. Throw distance: To get your projector working effectively, you‘ll need to understand the optimum distance between it and the screen, known as the 'throw distance'. This impacts the size of screen you would need and where the projector can be placed. Many projectors have zoom in/out functionality to make minor adjustments to the picture quality without changing the throw distance. You've made up your mind: a projector is the perfect AV solution for you. So how do you choose one? The brightness is enough to contend with early evening light, something we probably wouldn’t say about a few other battery-powered rivals, and while its lumen count goes down to 600 when on battery, that’s still more than portable Nebula rivals. As good as its picture performance is, the projector stumbles in a couple of places. Its attempts to adjust brightness on a shot-by-shot basis for some content can mean its overcorrecting in a way that makes the lighting quite jarring. Its motion smoothing can also be trouble as it helps reduce panning judder sometimes but introduces some glaring motion artifacts for everything else on screen. Fortunately, the Hisense L9G has a ton of available settings to adjust these features and many more, effectively letting users dial in the display however they like. You do have to put some careful consideration into whether this is the right option compared to a large TV though, projectors do have their limitations. You'll need a dark room or the image on screen can appear washed out and attaching the projector to your ceiling can require extensive DIY.

Almost all current projectors include at least one HDMI port, which is the preferred choice for video sources and many computers, unless you plan to connect over a wired or wireless network. Many projectors still offer a VGA (analog) connector for computers and component video, but few new computers have VGA output ports, and few new video sources offer component video. One way to avoid these artifacts is to use three chips, as with the three-LCD chip design that's standard for most LCD projectors. The three chips put all three primaries on screen at once, and let your brain integrate the colors over space rather than sequentially over time. But three-chip designs are expensive, and tend to add weight. Another alternative, which these lightweight single-LCD models offer, is to use a single large LCD with enough individual cells to deliver the resolution you need. Cover the cells in a 5,760-by-1,080-pixel matrix with red, green, and blue filters, so each set of red, green, and blue gives you a single pixel, and the image resolution works out to 1,920 (5,760 divided by 3) by 1,080 pixels. This single-LCD approach won't usually give you the same level of contrast that a DLP chip would, but it's guaranteed not to bother you with rainbow artifacts, potentially making for better image quality. Three-chip LCD projectors are free from rainbow artifacts, because the three chips allow projection of all three primary colors at once. However, they tend to be bigger and heavier than comparable DLP models. Standard-size LCOS projectors, also rainbow-free, offer the best-quality images, but they tend to be bigger and heavier than either DLP or LCD projectors, as well as far more expensive. There aren't many laser raster projectors, so it's hard to make general statements about them. But the one clear advantage of using a laser is that the image doesn't require focusing.

Cons: DLP projectors are often larger and nosier. Their bulbs have a relatively short life, meaning they can be costly to maintain. Single-chip DLP projectors are susceptible to the ‘rainbow effect’, a picture flaw involving bright objects on screen appearing to have multi-coloured trails. Not everyone can see these 'rainbows', but it can be very off-putting for those who can. High-end DLP models have three chips - one each for the primary colours – but they're more expensive. The key point to remember about the LSP9T’s picture niggles, though, is that they’re arguably a necessity with current affordable laser technologies, and a side effect of the explosive strengths of the projector’s impactful and remarkably TV-like pictures. Until recently, it was a given for almost all projectors that even if they included speakers, you should plan on using an external sound system to get decent audio quality. However, that's not always true today, largely thanks to two subcategories of home entertainment models. One is what we've dubbed "room-to-room portables." There are defined in part by offering robust audio, so you can move them around for ad hoc setup without having to lug a sound system with you also. Most are nearly cubical in shape, about twice as high as traditional projectors. They use the extra height for good-quality speakers, which are often chamber speakers. Most offer high enough volume to fill a large family room with more-than-acceptable sound quality. It runs Android TV to get you access to streaming apps (Netflix requires weird workarounds, once again) and has enough battery life to get you through most movies. You can load up videos via a USB drive, the HDMI connection or by using Chromecast from your phone, and from about three metres away you can blast out a big 100-inch image. We’ve highlighted which models have batteries on our list, and they last for between two to three hours. It’s also worth noting that some can run on a USB-C power bank to keep them going – we’d recommend a high-capacity one like our own Anker 737. Dimensions and Weight
