If you want to melt the plastic internals of the valve and not be able to cook your food, then it's highly recommended. While some backpackers are happy to eat freeze-dried food for days on end, for others, the ability to cook a more complicated meal is important. A fire steel is far more reliable than the piezo electric igniters used in camp stoves – especially in the rain.

I am not over keen on using this stove with my wider pans unless they have a bottom indentation to discourage sliding off. There are small alternatives to the 25g BRS 3000-T, such as the Fire Maple Hornet FMS-300T from Zhejiang Deermaple Outdoor Products. The best way to assemble the stove is to lift all the pot supports straight up above the burner and then secure them into position.
