Keeping ears clean & dry If your dog goes swimming every day and never has a problem with their ears, there’s no need to change your routine. But for dogs who battle ear infections after swimming or bathing, use a soft cotton rag or cotton balls to dry as much of the external canal as you can. Is canker powder good for dogs ears? Since my breed can have a tendency to lugs full of gunk, I use it as a preventative on a fortnightly basis. For anyone buying it, it should come with instructions for using it more often. Symptoms can include head shaking, bottom pulling, chewing paws and all over body scratching. What is ear canker? After you’ve cleaned both sides of your dog’s ears, wipe them out with a dry cotton ball or gauze pad. Finally, give your pup a good head rub with a soft cloth to help remove any remaining residue from their fur.

What is canker?

Give your pet some love, apply a pinch of powder using the end of a small spoon and lightly dust around the inner ear, avoiding the ear hole. Gently massage it in with your fingers from the outside. Relief comes with the first dose, but the treatment should continue for one to five days (usually three). Can thornit be used on puppies? I have personally been using thornit for over 20 years and it's an amazing product which I would never be without. I was told by a vet never to put powder of any sort into a dogs ears (she mentioned Thornit too) as it can clog up and cause even more problems. I think a lot of breeders use it though. I do know from experience that vets have particular ear drops that kill mites, reduce infection, act as an antibiotic and also get rid of ear wax - all in one drop! I would rather pay for this stuff myself than use a powder. Just my opinion!:o Apply a pinch of powder around the inner ear avoiding the ear hole, you may wish to apply the powder using a small soft brush or earbud. The main ingredient is Iodoform which has a very distinctive medical smell that helps to discourage the mites. Boric is also one of the ingredients which acts as an effective antiseptic to help with the damage that may be caused through the animal constantly scratching. Zinc oxide is also added as a drying and curing agent that helps irritation and to stop the itch cycle.

The symptoms are scratching, head shaking, rubbing of ears on the floor and general distress. There can be red sores, inflammation and scabs caused by constant scratching. How do I use canker powder? Directions for ears: The more usual forms are brownish waxy scabs inside the ears. These are caused by the mites chewing the ear. The scabs can be dry or weep slightly causing a smell. Canker of the ears is a nasty condition that causes a dog lots of discomfort. Outer ear inflammation or otitis externa can be a really serious problem with some dogs suffer from milder forms of the condition whereas others are affected a lot more. Canker can be caused by a few different things which includes breed and conformation. Dogs with droopy ears and narrow ear canals are more likely to suffer from the condition, especially if their canals are hairy because it affects the humidity and temperature within the ear.

How to clean your dog's ears

Rinse their mouth with warm salt water several times per day to help reduce inflammation and promote healing. You can also apply a topical ointment designed for canine oral health to the affected areas. Having done that, I can then very gently pull on any hair protruding from the canal and it should remove easily. I don't force it, if it doesn't come out with a very gentle pull, it's not going to! Dogs can be affected by allergies bought on by certain foods or any natural pollens as well as house dust and mould. Cases of chronic otitis externa are often triggered by this type of allergy which a vet would have to test and find out just what the root cause of the condition actually is. They would then be able to eliminate it and recommend a treatment. Certain Breeds Are More Prone to Get Canker
