Highlights, meanwhile, are gorgeous, really pushing the picture, sunsets, rain sheen and pyrotechnics are spectacular. Finally, a way to accurately measure the bond, or lack thereof, between mouse, PC and your display is all yours. The overhead channels are used to good effect, if you like ducking under weapon fire or helicopters, the opening space fight is a delight, especially the opening of the rift, but subtler effects, such as weather or rustling of leaves in the jungle or the idle of a diesel engine on the bus are nice touches. It also includes preset modes designed around specific game genres so that those games run and look as good as intended. It features a 1ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate and supports both AMD and Nvidia's brands of Adaptive-Sync.

Prey is solid genre fare in its own right, but it also brings the Predator series back on track after getting derailed with the mess of 2018's The Predator.Obviously, there have been some bumps along that road but 20th Century Fox clearly aims to right past wrongs with this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release. Led by Major “Dutch” Schaeffer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) under CIA supervision (provided by Carl Weathers), their mission is simple – slip into the dense jungle, free the hostages and get out quick. We haven't gotten to check out the 4K streaming version, but the HD Digital Copy does not appear to use the same DNR-slathered master provided for the Ultimate Hunter Edition release from 2010.

The Rattlesnake could "see" the predator whilst invisible as a Rattler has pits on its head that allows the snake to sense heat and track prey through its thermal radiation signature, much like a predator. Sure, it's low key, but that's probably just what we needed after all the other failed attempts to follow up the classic original. It's superbly done, and the more authentic language coupled with the Last of the Mohicans style score make for a noticeably more immersive experience, almost an entirely different experience from the US language version. There’s not a huge amount of connectivity here, but the reality is there’s very little that can actually drive the display anyway. SDR titles looked extra colorful, but there was hardly any improvement when moving over to HDR games.If you experience instability, try reducing the overclock to a lower refresh rate through the on-screen display settings. While 144Hz at 4K might seem run-of-the-mill, Philips pushes the limits with excellent video processing, perfect color and a bright picture. The black level is deeper and hiding more shadow detail, which increases the frame depth and really adds punch to the image. After witnessing the crash landing of an alien spacecraft, army sniper Quinn McKenna is quickly captured by the nefarious government agency tasked with recovering the alien technology, but not before he manages to mail his own son some proof of his sighting.

But rest assured that every bit of the fine detail and texture that’s present in the original camera negative appears in this 4K image. During his commentary, featured on the 4K disc, McTiernan says it was Fox’s notion that “Predator” was a “Rocky meets Alien” storyline. Such a simple premise brought to life by director John McTiernan who cast his film with huge muscle bound ‘actors’ all of whom wanting to take their size to the next level, which brought about a rivalry and intense competition on set that gives a fervour to the on screen personas. From the get go, we need to clarify that this monitor is obviously not for those into their competitive first person shooter titles. The other actors are solid performers and lend themselves to some entertaining and very brutal sequences in the film, including a sequence in the third act which had a nice nod to the ending of Predator 2.Being an action film the track is pretty aggressive and full on, though the few lighter touches add much. There are certainly films that look better in 4K Ultra HD, but this film has never looked better than it does here.

As a whole, this Predator 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is a vast improvement over any previous home video release - but it has unfortunate issues that simply can't be fixed, only mitigated. The cast is solid across the board, breathing life into characters that are sparsely drawn, but become absolutely familiar. French label Capricci Films has released a promo trailer for a new 2K restoration of dierctor John McTiernan's classic action film Predator (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Elpidia Carrillo, Bill Duke, and Jesse Ventura.

This was always going to be a problematic release but I have to hand it to Fox for doing a decent job. The 32-inch 4K gaming monitor segment is becoming very crowded, but the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQ looks to stand out with some trick features. Indeed it's a shame that his sophomore effort has been seemingly unceremoniously dumped on streaming rather than gifted a theatrical run, but he's likely to be a director to watch going forward, both on the small screen (he directed the first episode of The Boys, and he's got a Waterworld TV series coming up) and, hopefully, the Big Screen.
