The SH-9 is very similar to the A30pro in size, build quality, power, and output. Both are single ended that have balanced output connectors for convenience sake rather than differential outputs. The SH-9 uses the THX 888 module and has similar measurements. Its noise level isn’t quite as good as the A30Pro boasts but still well below the level of audibility. I think the SH-9 sounds a little dryer and has a bit more top end emphasis but with it being slightly less expensive than the A30pro it certainly bears consideration. The treble presentation is also very well controlled with this pair. Even higher-pitched piano notes have a natural timbral presentation while remaining generally crisp and impactful. The Topping A30 uses Texas Instruments OPA1611 and OPA2134 op-amplifiers in conjunction with a TPA6120A2 amplifier. The specs are mostly in line with similar products in the same price range (i.e. Schiit Magni 2 Uber). The only value which is starkly different is output impedance, which is really high and indicate the amplifier may work better with high-impedance headphones.On paper, the 2 devices utilize the same topology and they end up having similar measurements as well. So it would be easy to summarily assume that the A30 Pro and L30 would sound the same right? Well not really. That could be the reason why balanced amps if everything being equal have noticably better soundstage. The first thing I noticed was the size of the device. It is smaller than most of the DACs I reviewed on Headfonia. It is much smaller than the Topping D70s and it is also slightly smaller than the SMSL SU-9. It is not a heavy device either. The form-factor impressed me. The low gain mode though (which is less than 0 dB) should help keep the volume control in its more accurate range if you do run into a sample with worse performance.
