Description

The following quotations from the chapter “Following Jesus out of Cynicism” provide a sample of the scriptural wisdom he offers: “Jesus keeps in tension wariness about evil with a robust confidence in the goodness of his Father” (p. There's just something unique about this book - I don't envy the author his family life, and one or two of his anecdotes actually made me dislike him slightly - but I think it's a book that will get you praying. This book, though started very slowly contains a wonderful balance of theology, Good Biblical grounding and personal experience along with good practical stuff.

Perhaps what makes Miller's book so effective is that he talks about prayer not as a duty but as a desperate need.In just 30 short chapters Stormie Omartian uses Scripture and personal transparency to guide you toward a path of guilt free living and a life-changing faith in God. It's not often that you get a Christian book that combines solid theology with practical guidance: many good ones are strong on one side and weaker on the other. So read it, listen to a faithful brother, benefit from his wisdom, weigh what he says, and then throw yourself into the work of serving Christ by serving his church with a renewed commitment to crying out to our great God together in prayer.

Charles Spurgeon said, “I usually feel more dissatisfied with my prayers than with anything else I do” (“The Throne of Grace,” Spurgeon’s Sermons on Prayer [Hendrickson, 2007], 69). Indeed, the hypothetical godly interaction adds prayer and removes sinful anger, but it is also erases authority, discipline, and firm fatherliness. This seminar is not for victorious Christians, but Christians defeated in the trenches, asking… How do I focus when I’m distracted with so much to do? As a lifelong Christian, I've heard a great deal of teaching about prayer and read a good many books on the topic.

This book reminds readers that prayer is simply making conversation with God a rhythm of daily Christian life. We are all aware of its use in the American pop-culture (if you are not, just read your local news, movie reviews, sports page, or listen for it in the realm of American gossip or in your local gossip circles (I pray you do not have any). The lines from Genesis remind us of how “The cynic is always observing, critiquing, but never engaged, loving, and hoping. I need to talk to God in the same way and with the same attitude I would use in speaking to a trusted friend or loved one. However, after a significant amount of recent reading, I have become convinced that it is a major problem and that if I don't do something, I will be violating my responsibilities to the Lord and to my grandchildren.

It changed my prayer life in several tangible ways, but I would not recommend this audiobook to anyone. A Praying Church is a ‘page turner’—richly biblical, wonderfully practical, and chock-full of engaging testimonies and helpful illustrations. Well, recently my best friend got this for me and there were so many excellent pieces of wisdom, I had to share this one with y’all! Readers will learn how praying together can transform their communities into beacons of hope and be given practical strategies--such as finding a prayer partner and prioritizing a structured prayer time--to implement these changes in their own church.

When I look back in the aggregate at A Praying Life, I don’t think Miller cultivates a “real sense of sin” in the reader, but has a small view of the power of indwelling sin.Through personal stories and biblical examples, Miller teaches the why, what, and how of praying together. Of the many questions currently surrounding the discussion about justification, the relationship between justification and spiritual fruit merits attention.
