Description

Now you can enjoy elite gaming performance on a thin and light notebook with amazing battery life, thanks to the new AMD Ryzen 5000 H-Series Mobile Processors. Never compromise on your gaming laptop again. The HP Omen features a Full HD display with a 144Hz refresh rate. HP previously said there would also be a 300Hz configuration and a separate 4K option, but they are absent from HP’s online store at the time of review. After realizing the keyboard was off-center I took the 10fastfingers typing test and tried my best to not fat-finger two keys at a time. I scored 67 words per minute with 78% accuracy, which is not my best, but it would have to do. Running the Wolfenstein: Youngblood benchmark we noticed a massive difference between ray tracing off (104fps) and on (39fps). That’s because, while the GTX 1660Ti can run real-time ray tracing, it wasn’t originally designed to do so. Don’t think you’re getting an RTX GPU on the cheap; you’re not. With the extra keyboard space, HP has spread out the keys so there are sizeable gaps between them. I assume this has been done to help prevent gamers accidentally hitting the wrong key in the heat of battle, but I’ve found this design to be awkward for my muscle memory when typing out essays.

With an Intel Core i7-10750H processor, 16GB of RAM and a 1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD the Omen 15 can handle work just as easily as it does play.We put this to the test, setting the laptop to ‘Hybrid’ mode and turning the brightness down to 150 nits before running a PCMark 10 battery benchmark test. The Omen 15 saw a battery life of 3 hours and 42 minutes. That’s slightly better than your average gaming laptop, but still lags three hours behind the Zephyrus G14. HP has even abandoned its previous convoluted Omen logo for a more elegant and simple diamond. The lid’s diamond logo shimmers green and blue, alternating depending on the angle viewed. It looks gorgeous, and I can see it appealing to both gamers and non-gamers alike. Powering the Omen I tested is an Intel Core i5-10300H, a Nvidia RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, 16GB of 2933Mhz memory, and 512GB of SSD storage. The 144Hz screen looks clear, and colors aren't overly saturated. Instead, they're more life-like, and one could even argue, muted. The Omen 15 can be configured with a 300Hz display, offering a fast enough refresh rate for competitive eSports players. It makes sense to double the memory to 16GB, as HP did with the unit it sent me, and it also makes sense to double the amount of storage. The base 512GB of storage is enough for a game or two, but if you're using this for everyday tasks, video or photo editing, and gaming, you'll find that the SSD fills up pretty fast. HP Omen 15 – Battery life

I expected better from the Omen when it came to battery life because it has a powerful 70.9Wh / 5833mAh battery. The video rundown result of 8hrs 50mins wasn’t exactly bad, but other gaming machines have done better recently; namely the Asus Dash F15, which lasted three hours more from an only slightly larger-capacity battery. Of course, this is the downside of running a powerful 45W octa-core CPU. Aside from those standard HP wares, there are a few Omen-specific ones like the Omen Light Studio, Omen Audio Control and Omen Gaming hub. In the latter, you can see a list of all your games, clips you have taken while gaming, and rewards you’ve earned. There’s also access to remote gaming and coaching if you sign up for an Omen Gaming Hub membership. Find the Perfect Settings. The OMEN 15 doesn’t just stop at showstopping design and jaw-dropping specs appeal. With OMEN Gaming Hub, you can dial-in every element of your game. Plug and outplay with all the ports you'll ever need. Compared to other gaming laptops, there's no friend in sight.

The Omen 15 has a rather cool profile in our heat tests, which consists of running a full-screen HD video for 15 minutes. The touchpad measured 75 degrees Fahrenheit while the space between the G and H keys measured 86 degrees. The bottom of the laptop reached 88 degrees, which is well below the 95-degree comfort threshold. The HP Omen 15’s battery life is paltry at best, coming in at 3 hours and 12 minutes in our in-house battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits). It fell nearly 2 hours shy of the 4:44 premium gaming laptop average. The Asus ROG Strix G15 led our group, lasting 5 hours and 11 minutes with the Strix Scar III close behind at 5:09. Our group was rounded out by the Alienware m15 R3, which survived 4 hours and 55 minutes.

However, one of the most exciting things about the HP Omen 15 is that it includes recent Nvidia hardware. We also found that it performed extremely well with modern games and could confidently run even the most demanding AAA titles. By also taking its cumbersome weight in mind, this is a system best kept at home for the most part, and not for on-the-go use. You should buy the buy the HP Omen 15 (2020) if… For our finale using our Red Dead Redemption benchmark (1080p) the Omen 15 scored 58 fps, which is above the 54 fps average but, only rewarded the unit with second place as the Alienware m15 R3 scored 59 fps beating our unit by a nose. Closing out our group was the Asus ROG Strix G15 which strolled in at 30 fps. HP’s MSRP is subject to discount. HP’s MSRP price is shown as either a stand-alone price or as a strike-through price with a discounted or promotional price also listed. Discounted or promotional pricing is indicated by the presence of an additional higher MSRP strike-through price As for gaming-specific software, HP's Omen Gaming Hub comes preinstalled. It's the app you'll use to do things like view device stats, underplot the CPU to decrease power use without impacting performance, or force the Omen to use only the RTX 3060 GPU instead of letting Windows automatically switch between Intel's UHD graphics and the RTX 3060.

A Wide Vision 720p HD web camera can also be found nestled in the laptop’s top bezel, a white light indicating when it’s active. Photo and video quality is a little grainy, but more than adequate for meetings with friends, family and colleagues. Keyboard – HP goes for silent over mechanical

We put the HP Omen 15 to the test on some well-known benchmarking exercises (all at 1080p), here's how it matched up: The HP Omen also sees a spacious 1TB SSD included, featuring speedy read and write speeds at 3431MB/s and 2,793 MB/s respectively. These are very fast scores, and should ensure nippy loading and saving times when using the integrated drive. Battery – Not good enough for on-the-go gaming

It would seem not all Omens are bad

The HP Omen 15 (2020) is an admirably powerful gaming laptop, seeing specs climb as high as the 10th Generation Intel Core i7-10750H processor and Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics card. HP sent me the top-tier configuration so I can see exactly how powerful these specs are. I enjoyed typing on the Omen's keyboard. There's very little movement in the keys, and they aren't overly loud, so it's unlikely you'll annoy your roommates or partner while they're working (or trying to sleep) in the room around the corner. The Omen outscored its competition during our synthetic tests, starting with Geekbench 5.0, an overall performance benchmark. The Omen scored 6,416, pushing past the Alienware m15 (Intel Core i7-10750H), which scored 6.314, followed by the Asus ROB Strix G 15 (Intel Core i7-10750H) and its5,210. However, all of our competitors fell below the premiere gaming laptop average of 7,378
