To celebrate, we are going to share some of our favourite Scottish stories for children. Not just by Scottish authors, these tales also take in the wonderful scenery, people and language that makes Scottish storytelling so special. Greyfriars Bobby, Eleanor Atkinson We are a big ol’ bunch of book worms here at One Day. That means whenever Book Weeks roll around, we are positively chomping at the bit to visit schools and share in their literary celebrations!

This week is Book Week Scotland, offering an opportunity to share Scottish authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers and more! Scotland has a wonderfully rich literary history. Did you know that famous authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island), J. M. Barrie (Peter Pan) and Kenneth Grahame (The Wind in the Willows) all hail from this beautiful country? I bought this book mostly because the protagonist is my namesake and I thought it would be fun to read to my class (all the teachers are known by their 1st names). Unfortunately, the writing is not hugely exciting, although the artwork is quite good which compensates. Reading to the class without showing the pictures however, does not work very well because there is little or no description in the book itself. Hamish the Hairy Haggis lives in the Highlands of Scotland. While everyone else in Inverhaggis enjoys a big Hogmanay party, Hamish is keeping his head down. Why? Because Hogmanay marks the start of the Haggis Bashing season. Can Hamish escape the Inverhaggis Burns Supper before he becomes the main meal?A fun and exciting story for children about the mythical haggis with full colour illustrations throughout.Honourable mentions also go to Hairy Maclary, The Boy and the Bunnet and The Tobermory Cat. And of course if it’s Scottish poetry you’re after, then it has to be Robert Burns.

We hope this list of Scottish stories for children inspires you, and if you have any of your own recommendations please do let us know! Don’t forget we do offer some of these titles (Greyfriars Bobby, Hamish the Hairy Haggis, No Such Thing As Nessie) as drama workshops for your school! Wishing you a happy and magical Book Week, Scotland. Being English and growing up in England, the first time I came across haggis was when I was invited to my first Burns Supper at the tender age of 22, now a long time ago! So, what is Burns Night and what’s its connection with haggis? Ben Nevis is the UK’s highest mountain at 1345m (4413 feet) and attracts thousands of hikers, trekkers and mountaineers each year hoping to summit this iconic peak. Many of our guests at Distant Hills Guest House book to stay with us because we are just a short drive away from Ben Nevis, which is situated in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Other enticing factors may be our hot tub and honesty bar, both well-deserved treats after an epic hike or climb!
