Description

In a clever turn, our protagonist wonders what it feels like to have the movement of other kids; even as the reader/listener must wonder what it is like to be her, with such limited movement and a motorized chair. Flood invites curiosity. Swaney’s illustrations are magical and magically inclusive. Eva has two mothers and the children are of all colors, shapes, and abilities. There is a prosthetic leg, a walker, crutches, and wheel chairs. There are fully ambulant children also, who are essential to the message that dance and life is something that must be done together—“Not alone.” Giraffes Can’t Dance would be a great book to show students they can do anything if they put their minds to it.

Choreography and Narrative: Ballet’s Staging of Story and Desireby Susan Leigh Foster: An exploration of the role of narrative in ballet choreography, with insights into how storytelling can enhance the emotional impact of dance. William Forsythe: Choreographic Objects Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, there’s always something to be gained from reading about dance. Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best dance books out there, grouped according to skill level. Understanding Dance Theory and Techniques Now onto the two issues that I had with this book and warning that the next two paragraphs will have brief spoilers, but I’ll try to be vague in what I’m discussing. Spanish Dancing - A Practical Handbook" by Lalagia - Spanish Dancing is a detailed practical introduction for beginners wishing to master both technique and execution. The student is taken from the use of the castanets and arm positions to basic steps such as Taconeo and Zapateado and on to performance of the complete dances Las Sevillanas and the Fandango, complimented by over 150 line drawings by Lyn Gray". World Dance Culturesby Patricia Leigh Beaman: An exploration of different dance styles from around the world, with insights into the cultural contexts that shape them. Gaining Inspiration from Dance Legends

I was excited for this book. The premise seamed cool: Girl doesn't believe in love, boy makes her believe. But to me it turned out to be a total shit show: So here is my rant basically.

Also can I put it out there that in this book there is a couple called Sheldon and Shelly, I don't know why that makes me laugh. So our girl decides to try, she goes up the elevator and stops at the entrance of the dance studio. Inside are young dancers “with canes and crutches, walkers and wheels, bare feet, slippers, or callouses,” and prosthetics. They are a spectrum of color, boys, girls, androgynous alike. And they welcome her.

The Dancer’s Way: The New York City Ballet Guide to Mind, Body, and Nutritionby Linda H. Hamilton: A guide to taking care of yourself as a dancer, with tips on nutrition, injury prevention, and mental wellness. The Dance Technique of Doris Humphrey and its Creative Potential I said in a review a while ago that I am still not ok with reading about people dying suddenly (especially if it's because of an illness that came out of the blue). I still find myself easily triggered and I avoid any and all books who have even a hint of anything similar. But that is my issue, it does not mean the book is not good. It is! I actually enjoyed it very much up until that point and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am disappointed it's not just "another cliché romcom". Minus points for giving Evie’s cheating father and the other woman too much of a pass in the end. I’m not saying she shouldn’t forgive him, I’m saying, don’t justify cheating. It’s a non-starter for me.

Sport First Aid" - Melinda J Flegel - A clear and up-to-date explanation of first aid procedures for coaches to use in responding to athletes' injuries. The description of every injury includes a brief definition, causes, symptoms, signs, first aid protocols for the coach to follow, notes on when the athlete can return to play and tips on how to prevent the injury It isn’t just a chair—it’s a steel chair, strong, unbendable, reliable. But humans aren’t made of steel. To dream we must bend, we must risk. As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance Studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. His philosophy is to say yes to everything--including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he's only just met.

Characters were good to follow, I really loved X. Evie was good although some things I wanted for her to deal differently with. Instructions for Dancing” is an adorably bittersweet young adult - coming-of-age - endearing novel…… Dance Composition: A Practical Guide to Creative Success in Dance Makingby Jacqueline M. Smith-Autard: A guide to creating dances, with insights into choreography, music, and performance. Movement for Actors Shirley's mom keeps going: "And you should see the way he looks at my Shirley, like she put the sun and the moon and all the stars in the sky. It's almost embarrassing the way he loves her. But a love like that is what she deserves." This book was Nicola Yoon’s first book that wasn’t just contemporary romance. There was a dash of fantasy added into the story and it was done so well. It’s more magical realism than fantasy, but the magical element made the story that much more interesting.

At the end of the book, the author explains that a program called Young Dance inspired this picture book. The Executive Director of the Young Dance program also shares information on the program and its opportunities for children of all abilities. This picture book is inspiring on a variety of levels, for children who may think their limitations would prevent them from dancing, certainly. Plus it also shows everyone else not to make assumptions about what is possible and whether a dream can come true. Still, it is based firmly in reality, and as the book points out takes imagination and makes it real. The color palette is lovely, the warm hues bright against the blue-green washes; the ribbons of movement, both visualized and invisibly thread as our eyes move through the sequences. She creates visual themes to echo the narrative; the cords from her stay in NICU suggesting something was there at the very beginning. I appreciate the skill and marvel at Swaney compositions of movement, posture, in both the abstract shadow images and the realistic bodies. Paired with Flood’s sensory text, we can imagine ourselves among the dancers. This is a brilliant story and makes me remember the sheer excitement of exploring the world of exotic animals and the exciting places they lived. The story uses colourful illustrations and a rhythmical storyline which provides a musical and fast paced feel.

It’s a happily ever after but with an ending to the happy. It’s annoyingly and obviously real. Life can be a pile of shit, but there are plenty of joyous moments and I like that this book emphasised the importance of living in the moment and appreciating them right there and then. DNFing this book because towards the end it takes a very sad turn, one I do not like and did not expect. I’ve been here for 108 years. It may be nearly time I left, go on to the next planet, start the next journey. I don’t want to leave; I still like it here. But I’m not worried about death.
