I came away buzzing and reassured that we still have in this century a wide ranging community fascinated not just by famous authors (I’ve rarely seen so many concentrated in one place) but by challenging ideas and questions. The agreement, then, helped frame the contours of modern nation states in a region where before there had been none. Since it’s essentially an accord between two colonialist powers external to the region, it would have devastating effects. The Sykes-Picot Agreement is instrumental to understanding the modern Middle East. It represents the framework of its colonial past and shows the potential for national fractures inherent to the region’s present and future. Initially, Israel wished to confine its actions to Egypt, even giving King Hussein the opportunity to stay on the sidelines. Hussein did not, however, which allowed Israel to capture the West Bank, including the entirety of Jerusalem. Ultimately, using Syrian shelling as a casus belli, Israel took the Golan as well.

The Making of the Modern Middle East: A Personal History

by Laura Robson, author of States of Separation: Transfer, Partition, and the Making of the Modern Middle East For years now, pundits and politicians alike have been tossing around the idea of … Though the author says that he sets out to provide an objective history of the Six Day War, there are two glowing descretions: He's Jewish and Israeli. And though, again, objectivity was the goal, why did I find myself, someone unsure of how he falls on the Jews for Israel scale, thinkng, "Woo! Way to go Israel!" in response to the military narrative. The Oxford festival is the most elegant and atmospheric of literary festivals. It’s a pleasure to both attend and perform there. I really enjoyed this book , it is a mixture of the personal and historical perspective , giving me an insight into the complexities of the Middle East which is what I was looking for. Jeremy Bowen, the International Editor of the BBC, has been covering the Middle East since 1989 and is uniquely placed to explain its complex past and its troubled present. Here, Bowen offers readers a gripping and invaluable guide to the modern Middle East, how it came to be and what its future might hold.

The book analyzes the role of Nazi propaganda and the mufti, in spreading Nazi ideology and inciting antisemitism in the Middle East. [3] [1] [4] [5] [6] The book also charts the development of the Middle East as it became modern, leading reviewer Johannes Houwink ten Cate to describe the title as apt. The chains of command were hard to understand. Most of the maps were quite useful, but some – like the Golan Campaign – were a bit too dense for me to absorb. The other overwhelming impression the book gave me is of how ignorant the Egyptians were of what the Israelis were doing despite the evidence in front of them. The rest of the world was also largely ignorant of how bad the situation was on the ground and how fast everything changed. It reminded me of how the world blundered into war in 1914. During Britain’s and France’s interwar occupation of Iraq, Palestine, and Syria, the British and French mandate governments and the League of Nations undertook a series of varied but linked campaigns of ethnic removal and separation targeting the Armenian, Assyrian, and Jewish communities within these countries. Such schemes served simultaneously as a practical method of controlling colonial subjects and as a rationale for imposing a neo-imperial international governance, with long-standing consequences for the region. Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has called for the replacing of the Middle East’s crumbling nations with a transnational regional power. Reuters

This definitely is the most comprehensive work to date on the Six Day War. The author has consulted vastly documents, newspapers, books and interviews with important players. In war, the mistakes of the enemy are often as important as the plans of the winners. In this case, arrogance and mistrust among the Egyptian leaders was followed by a betrayal by their allies. The end was Israel more than doubling in territory and smashing three Arab armies.
