Ultimately the book which was supposed to be a page turner, ended up being heavy and failed to leave a real impact. There are some very good dynamics between the key characters especially Cameron and Addie with that situation being in constant flux.

I wasn't keen when I started this book which is set partly in the present time and partly in 2050, a very different world where the UK is partially submerged in water and suffering from extreme weather conditions. Glasgow detective Cameron Brodie volunteers to fly out to investigate Younger’s death, but his ulterior motive is something else all together. It’s 2051 and despite climate activists clear warnings, vast quantities of the planet are now under water with some countries having entirely disappeared resulting in refugees seeking homes wherever there is land. If this was not enough to cause despair, he has learned that he has only six months, perhaps less, to live. From the twelve-million copy bestselling author of the Lewis trilogy comes a chilling new mystery set in the isolated Scottish Highlands. A young meteorologist checking a mountain top weather station in Kinlochleven discovers the body of a missing man entombed in ice. Quando lo metti giù è tutto un po' incredibile (il detective Brodie è dotato di occhialetti che manco James Bond, ma il giornalista Younger stenografa), ma va bene così.

There’s more going on here, Brodie is estranged from his daughter who just happens to be married to the local police officer. His wife committed suicide, and his daughter, Addie, hates him and has not spoken to him for ten years. In November 2051, a young meteorologist is checking her weather station in the western Scottish Highlands when she comes across a body in a patch of ice in a corrie. Chilling, as well as the location and weather for its setting, is the future portrayed by climate change in this tale of murder, political betrayal, and family estrangement.I'm a reader who struggles to really visualize scenery, the author was descriptive and helped with this, but occasionally felt like it was too much and just slowed the book down. After a slightly rocky introduction, Brodie finds that he gets on quite well with police pathologist Dr Sita Roy, and both are relieved when their eVTOL (electric helicopter) sets them down safely during an ice storm, in the blacked-out village of Kinlochleven. Set almost 30 years into the future with a futuristic, automated "helicopter" controlled by the robotic "Eve", and with many other technological devices, plus the devastating effects of climate change, I found Cameron to be a great character. Brodie seeks to find his estranged daughter and make things right while solving a dissapeance in the northern climes of Scotland. But, THIS author, refreshingly, leaves behind all that has become common and cliched about our near-future.
