Description

The Benromach 10 100° holds its own against many other older more expensive whiskies, this punches well above its weight.

This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky. I will warn you there is a slight soapy taste most prevalent in the mid palate, but not in a bad way, at least not to me. This 10 also gets better as it stands. So the key word with a bottle like this is, "take your time", be patient, slow down to its pace and you will be greatly rewarded with the deliciousness that is Benromach 10. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Even though we usually identify peated whiskies with Islay, not so long ago there was a bit of peat smoke in lots of whiskies, including Speyside. That is why it isn’t so strange to find a slightly smoky touch in Johnnie Walker, the best-selling blended scotch.Peated to 12-14ppm, so a little less than Highland Park, then matured in 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry and married for the tenth year in sherry casks. What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over. EVERYONE says they only use the finest oak casks and mathematically that just isn’t possible. This is an eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, ghost statement. Use your words to give us real, useful, info about the process. The only way “we only use the finest oak casks” would mean anything is if there were brands touting their use of only the most tired and worn-out 5th+ fill casks. That will never happen, so please. Stop the garbage marketing fluff. Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. In the glass, Benromach 10 is gold with medium tears. On the nose, it starts with some light peated notes, accompanied by a herbaceous touch full of wet grass fragrances. There are some fruity notes, mostly citrus, but also pear and apple. There are some sweet aromas, lead by butter and malted barley notes, and a touch of caramel. It has enough body to take some water and opens up with a few drops, patience is rewarded with this one. Above all, don’t be afraid to be “wrong” or to sound stupid. The best thing to do is to just consider what jumps out most at you when you smell or taste a spirit. Once you’ve allowed yourself to do that, and got past the mental “I don’t know how to do this” barrier, you’ll find that it all comes naturally.

On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate. You are responsible for all activities through your account. The old ‘Romach 10 was a marriage of 80% ex-Bourbon and 20% ex-Sherry casks that spent 12 months finishing in ex-Oloroso casks. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying. The more you’ll taste, the more you’ll zone in on the little differences, and the broader you vocabulary will organically become. In reality there are normally no more than two or three “dominant” characteristics in a whisky, which tend to be the ones we flag up first in tasting notes. The other flavours and aromas are where things get particularly individual and personal – for instance where I’ve said “peach” another taster might get a different stone fruit – or perhaps a different fruit entirely.
