As we mentioned earlier, Polish has only three tenses. But in Polish grammar, verbs also conjugate based on an additional component: aspect. It focuses on the completion of an action, which is why we have two kinds of verbs: perfective ( dokonany) and imperfective ( niedokonany). Dz The pronunciation of dz is like the ds in Leeds or goods and is indicated by dz in the phonetic script. Practise the following words: dzwon (dzvon) (bell) bardzo (bar-dzo) (very) As a beginner, the essentials are clearly explained. If you want to build on existing knowledge, you can listen to the more advanced units.

Daria Gabryanczyk holds a degree in Teaching Modern Languages. She teaches Polish literature and Polish as a foreign language to schoolchildren, undergraduates and adults. Think of it this way: no matter how old you are, you’re essentially like a child if you’re learning Polish for the first time. Look up words you don’t understand Don’t add more stress upon yourself by using resources that you can’t fully understand. Don’t dismiss children’s books Counting prepositions Prepositions count as syllables of the words they join with, as if they were one word, so you place the stress accordingly: bez cukru (bes tsu-kroo) (without sugar): Three syllables in total hence you emphasise tsu, which is the next to last one. dla nas (dla nas) (for us): Here, you can see two syllables in total and, if you count from the end, the stress falls on dla, which is the second to last syllable. A similar situation happens in the case of negative verbs. If you have nie followed by a one-syllable verb, the nie part is stressed: nie mam (n’ye mam) (I don’t have) nie spał (n’ye spaw) (he wasn’t asleep) Getting Introductions Right In this section, I cover how to introduce yourself and how to ask people their name. Here, again, different situations require different expressions. Being formal or informal is all about the words and expressions you use; in other words – how you ask the question. Phrases you use to talk about yourself remain the same regardless of the type of situation.

5. Aspect: Perfective and Imperfective

The book contains 20 short learning units that start by establishing your communication goals. It then moves on to new vocabulary and grammar explanations with extensive exercises. There are plenty of reading and writing sections to consolidate your learning, too.
