Description

Since squalene is very unstable, Biossance uses squalane because it’s a saturated and stable hydrocarbon that mimics squalene. According to a publication in the journal Advances in Food and Nutrition Research , anticancer, antioxidant, detoxifying, skin hydrating, and emollient activities of both squalene and squalane have been reported both in animal models and in vitro environments.

And a similar Biossance Sunscreen review says, “I used this product twice; both times I had facial swelling and horrible itching and redness.” Our Verdict Normal (well kind of - it's purified and deionized) water. Usually the main solvent in cosmetic products. An emollient and natural moisturizer that can be found also in the sebum (oily stuff our skin produces). It leaves a nice non-greasy, non-heavy feeling on the skin.

Pros

The neutralized form of gluconic acid. It's a great ingredient to neutralize metal (especially iron and copper) ions in a cosmetic product. This helpsto prevent discoloration of the formula over time or rancidity of cosmetic oils. It can also be a pH regulator and a humectant (helps skin to cling onto water). For example, one review says, “I had a bad reaction to this. I have combination skin, can be sensitive at times. I loved the way it felt on my skin at first. But after I stepped out in the sun my face turned so bad around my mouth and under my right eye. Had rashes.” A liquid fatty acid with great odour, thermal and oxidation stability. It's great for the stabilization of pigments and mineral particles in oils and solvents.

It calms and cools sun-stressed skin and leaves absolutely everyone with a soft, dewy finish. It’s pretty much the current IT- preservative. It’s safe and gentle, but even more importantly, it’s not a feared-by-everyone-mostly-without-scientific-reason paraben. The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicerand even broader spectrum protection. It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadestrange sunscreen available today. Instead, she says, you should be using sun protection products with moisturizers in them. In other words, the shelf space that's traditionally been reserved for an a.m. moisturizer that's got SPF in it should be swapped, instead, for a sunscreen with moisturizing ingredients. Still with me? Since products that are marketed as sunscreen are subject to FDA regulations (which, as Dr. Gohara pointed out, moisturizers are not), you'll be sure you're getting the purported amount of SPF protection. If physical sunscreensdon't tell you anything, go ahead and read about the basics here. Most of what we wrote about Titanium Dioxideis also true for Zinc Oxide so we will focus here on the differences.
