It is only when magic intervenes and the reindeer comes to life that everything comes right and the bookshop is saved. Christmassy and colourful, young readers up to 37 books tall will love it. Five Bears Recommended by ReadPlus!“Right from the very first chapter, ‘Shall I tell you a secret?’ where the author tells the reader that science is about asking questions, it is clear this will become a treasured bedtime or indeed, anytime book.” With engaging and accessible text and accompanied by exciting, inviting illustrations, The Bedtime Book of Impossible Questions is the perfect bedside companion to delve into when you are wondering if there really is an answer to everything. I make them engaging for myself. I focus on the facts, connections, questions, and analogies that fill me with wonder and let my curiosity show me which way to go into a topic. I think about how an eight-year-old would talk about a topic they are passionate about, with unbridled wonder and joy.

First, I've had the honour of visiting dozens of schools, meeting thousands of children and answering hundreds of questions. It's always my favourite part of a visit. Every question in the book comes from this collection, apart from one. Are cats liquid or solid? was asked - and answered - by a physicist called Marc Antoine-Fardin. I often use it in school assemblies to demonstrate the sheer joy of using science and mathematics to provide satisfying answers to bamboozling questions, so it had to have an honorary spot in the book! With a toddler who asks me why, dozens of times a day, I'm relieved to have found the perfect book to satisfy her curiosity! The range of topics and breadth of science covered is breathtaking, and the illustrations bring a beautiful warmth. Forget my child, I'm learning loads too. Absolutely! Every time I speak to children and introduce myself as the author of 200+ books, I immediately tell them a secret. A secret that all science writers (and scientists) share. Nobody carries all this knowledge around in their head with them, and often I begin writing about a topic knowing nothing at all! However, with imaginative questions and diligent research, you really can find an answer to everything… To answer the 73 questions in this book, my footnotes tell me I consulted more than 500 sources! The premise of the book - and the source of all creativity - is connections. The idea for this book came from three things that slowly melded themselves in my mind.

The five bears of the title are all different and are ‘proper’ bears – as opposed to the teddy sort. Each starts out by being lonely, but one by one and by just hanging about together they all find good friends in the end. As for Sofi’s bees, apparently the little fellows rarely get honey on them, but when they do they meticulously groom themselves. Another reason to admire them. Why, The Repair Shop, of course. Jay Blades and his merry men and women work their magic and Lizzy is made as new as ever as she is passed to the youngest member of the family. A story for young doll owners who will understand how important it was for Lizzie to be mended. Recommended by Nature Ecology & Evolution!“The Bedtime Book of Impossible Questions is filled with interesting questions and engaging, science-based answers. There is plenty to appeal to curiosity about the physical and biological world and author Isabel Thomas takes every opportunity to introduce fundamental scientific concepts in an accessible way for readers over the age of 7.” This would be a wonderful addition to a young child’s bookshelf.
