Description

While his dad is in space, Jamie, his younger sister and his artist mother are living with his ex-rocker grandfather. He’s an astronaut, and he’s currently orbiting the earth on the International Space Station, about 400kms above the planet’s surface. It is helpful to have a book that can be used in class alongside a space topic and there is some solid 'space' content. This book follows the story of Jamie Drake, whose father is an astronaut on a mission on the International Space Station, and while all the kids at school think this is amazing and really cool, all Jamie wants is for his Dad to be a normal dad.

It might also inspire a previously unknown interest in science/maths from those who are just fans of a good book.Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. This family drama/sci-fi-from-a-child’s-eye-view story reminded me of classics from my own childhood - especially Chocky by John Wyndham and the film E. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first.

This is the 2nd book by Christopher Edge that I have read and I will admit to loving his style of writing.

Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. The Jamie Drake equation is a really exciting and moving account of a boy who has a father as an astronaut. As such, I can see children being enthralled by concepts such as the Fibonacci Sequence and Drake’s Equation. Wouldn’t it all seem to be rather desperate, especially if Jamie’s warned away from the observatory?

Jaime's experience in the book is exactly what they were striving for, but not without the same respectful fear of potentially unpleasant outcomes if aliens actually "answered the phone. Nosy Crow) The Jamie Drake Equation hits all the spots from science to real life, to affirmation, to possibilities. A cosmic adventure for anyone who’s ever looked at the stars, from the author of The Many Worlds of Albie Bright.I used to think that Dad was the star of our family’s solar system, but now I know that the light shines in all of us. While doing his homework at the observation lab one night, Jamie's phone picks up a up a weird signal. The Standard Model is the mindblowing theory that describes all the elementary particles and how they interact. A son of two scientists, it's only natural that Albie uses quantum theory when his mum dies, to find a parallel universe where she's still alive.

It also tells a more personal story of Jamie and an almost behind the scenes look at the life of an astronaut’s family, it isn’t all exciting, it is also terrifying and causes Jamie to feel resentful that he has to share his dad with everyone else and hurt that he’d rather be in space than at home. However, as I've got older I've enjoyed reading fiction and non-fiction books that explore scientific concepts. To coincide with his dad's mission, Jamie's school is having a Space week and kids are designing aliens and making costumes to dress up in. That’s not a bad thing, but there’s this almost Armageddon feel to the end and I really don’t want to make the kids cry! Once again Christopher has managed to expand my mind with this fantastic adventure delivering an emotional story which packs a punch in terms of tension and drama.Back on Earth, Jamie is worrying about his Dad and trying to come to terms with the news of his parents’ upcoming divorce. As the alien life force makes contact with him, Jamie gains insight into the universe, but his new friend also comes to understand more about the Earth, and when something unexpected happens at the space station, Jamie is able to somehow save his father. The author also drops hints about his mother's sacrifices on behalf of his father's career, something that many readers may not have considered before.
