Creating your own swimwear doesn’t need to be difficult! You can sew your own gorgeous swimsuit and make a splash this summer with our favourite patterns and top tips. On the top front, cut the elastic 1 5/8 inches longer than your A to I measurement. Mark A and I apart. Align the marks on the lining and elastic, and then pin. Now since the leg hole opening is a circle, there needs to be an over/underlap of the elastic. I like this to happen at the side seams since the crotch seam is already bulked up with the gusset and I think the less going on down there the better . . . I hope that sewing your own swimsuit feels a little bit less intimidating now! A project sewn in so much stretch fabric is only an obstacle until you get addicted to that custom fit! "Stretch" Your Skills First things first: you don’t even need a serger to sew your own swimwear. Sure, it helps, but it’s not necessary.

Use a serger to sew your swimwear fabric right sides together. Standard seam allowances for most swimwear projects is going to be three eight of an inch, so make sure that your blade is engaged and you'll be cutting off approximately an eighth of an inch as you sew. Now that I've covered the basics of swimwear notions, I'm going to show you some basic construction techniques. On the front tab piece, fold right sides together and sew. Pin the tab in place, right side down, on the front piece, just along its center.Combined with the effects of saltwater or chlorine, your fabric can have unintended side-effects when chosen poorly. Swimwear fabric should be composed of one hundred percent man-made fibers. Natural fibers like cotton will absorb water, making it an impractical choice, literally dragging you down. Look for fabrics that are mostly composed of nylon, anywhere between 80 and 90 percent, but also have a significant amount of Lycra or spandex around 10 to 20 percent. We’re always open to your suggestions, so please get in touch if there are any tutorials you would like to see, or machines covered. First, let's talk about fabric. Swimmer patterns are drafted with negative ease. This means that the finished garment measurements are actually smaller than the body measurements. Choosing a fabric with ample stretch ensures that you'll be able to put the swimsuit on and actually move in it. Two-way stretch fabric will accommodate stretch from selvage to selvage, but it does not offer much stretch in the length of grain. Two-way stretch fabric works for some two-piece suits, but never, ever, ever one piece, since you need one pieces to have some vertical stretch to them. Four-way stretch will stretch from selvage to selvage and then also in the length of grain, making it an ideal choice for maillots, which is a one piece swimsuit, as well as two-piece swimsuits.Looking for a cute hair accessory to complete your beach outfit? One-piece swimsuit pattern with shoulder ties If you are using your regular sewing machine, all you need is a ball point sewing machine needle. These needles most of the time say STRETCH right on them. The machine needle really is the key to sewing swimwear (and knits in general) without any skipped stitches. This is because the ball point needle doesn’t puncture the elastic fibers in the fabric, but simply pushes them to the side to create the stitch.

Pin the straps 1 5/8 inches away from the side seams. Put on the top and adjust as necessary. When you’re happy with the placement, stitch them with a wide zig-zag stitch near the edge, and a narrow zig-zag about 5/16 inch away from the edge, right sides together. Bombshell Suit Sophie Swimsuit Faye Swimsuit Once the side seams are sewn and the gusset is installed, it’s time to elasticate and finish those leg holes. Just like finishing an edge, you need to first start serging/stitching the elastic to the WRONG side of the fabric. Opacity: Does the fabric become more opaque when stretched? If yes, this fabric will be see-through when wet.Place these stays on the side seam allowances, beginning from the lower edge. Sew with a wide zig-zag stitch, and fold the seam allowances to the front. A serger or domestic sewing machine canbe used to construct your swimsuit. The following are my favorite techniques, using both types of machines. Rubber elastic can also be used when making swimwear. This type of elastic can be applied in the exact same manner of its cotton counterpart, but it can be a little bit slippery and more challenging to work with. Rubber elastic has a little bit lower profile and can create a less bulky edge finish, making it a really good choice if you want to reduce bulk in your swimsuit. Four-way stretch fabric, where the stretch is both lengthwise and crosswise, is the best material for full, one-piece swimsuits – though it also suits bikinis. Sometimes a swimsuit pattern includes elastic in a seam. This is used to add support and stability to an area that might be prone to extra stress. To do this, sew a seam using a serger or a zigzag stitch, then clip the elastic to the seam allowance and attach it using a zigzag stitch again, stretching evenly as you stitch. Turn the unit right side out and admire your stretchy and supportive seam. Fabrics composed of nylon, about 80% to 90%, while also composed of Lycra and spandex, are good choices. Stretching When you buy this pattern, you get two for the price of one! It’s reversible, so you can choose two fabrics you love and turn it inside out whenever you want a new look. It’ll soon be your new favourite swimming costume. This pattern comes in sizes XS to XL.Choosing the right fabric is key in any project, but even more so when it comes to swimsuits. When swimwear mistakes occur, they are often disastrous. Lay pattern pieces on the fabric and lining, then cut appropriately. Place the lining, wrong sides together, and retrace the elastic placement marks on lining. Mark the organza placement on the lining. Add in the bust darts. Fold the baric to line up the dart legs and pin the dart in place. Sew with a long and narrow zigzag stitch to let it stretch. Stretching: Does the fabric stretch two-way, or four-way? Four-way stretching is much better for swimwear.
