Description

Hamish, the lighthouse keeper's cat, has been neglecting his duties and the mice are running wild all over the lighthouse. One day some seagulls discover the lunch that is sent from his wife to the lighthouse and eat the whole lot. The book is about a Lighthouse keeper who lives with his life in a cottage from the cliffs across from the lighthouse. By the end of the lesson, your Year 2 class will have developed a checklist of key features to refer to when writing their own instructions.

His wife prepares him delicious lunches, which she sends to him via a pulley system between the cottage and the lighthouse. Although not mentioned in the narrative, the illustrations depict a huge variety of ships and boats - can children spot and explain them all? This six-lesson instructions Year 2 planning pack provides everything you need to deliver these fun and engaging lessons, including detailed lesson plans, slideshows for the teaching inputs, differentiated activities and a range of printable teaching resources. When my lot were little, there was only this one - but my grandson quickly spotted that there are several more now in the same series! We’ve also made lighthouses, painted pictures of lighthouses and discussed how to stop the seagulls stealing the food. They will decide which time adverbials and imperative verbs to use for each step whilst higher-ability children will be challenged to plan in adverbs they will use. This instructions Year 2 Lesson Pack contains everything you need to help children produce a high quality written set of instructions including a detailed lesson plan, slideshow, printable writing frames and differentiated word banks.

Despite its wordiness, this book is perfectly pitched for Reception, and the children are now even more excited about our visit to the beach! The presentation of the illustrations are a little odd in choice - some slightly blurry close-ups and odd angles but the Hamish's expression had me in stitches throughout and I cannot but admit that I was smitten by the seagulls who seem to have popped off the old 'oh err missus postcards of the 1930s.Every day, Mrs Grinling makes him a delicious lunch and sends it to the lighthouse by a special cable system. I find the dialogue between the seagulls amusing, especially when they tease Hamish (Hamish isn’t the threat to the seagulls that Mrs Grinling hopes he will be!
