But all we (as the readers) know about him is that he once suggested erotic asphyxiation to her and then backed off when she said she didn't want to try it.

The Apartment Upstairs by Lesley Kara | Waterstones

Overall, this is very easy to read, it flows well with crisply written chapters that keep you invested and reading long past bedtime! I loved the characterisation and how the relationships between the characters evolve: It plays an important part in creating tension and building up strain. Scarlett / Lindsey / Dee are brilliant characters that portray strong independent women, which I absolutely love! I enjoy the way the story slowly unfolds, allowing you to feel comfortable with the characters and their roles before everything is turned upside down. I had not ready books by Lesley Kara before but it was a good sign when shortly after starting it I was already looking to see what other books she had written.

Beautifully written, immersive and entertaining This Girl That Girl is a great addition to the psychological thriller genre. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The family dynamics are done so well, with the male members of Scarlett's family assuming that her illness makes her weak, at times almost manipulating her to believe that herself. ABOUT 'THE APARTMENT UPSTAIRS': Scarlett's aunt lived - and was brutally murdered - in the apartment upstairs. This is a slow burn thriller that had me asking so many questions and looking for clues to find the answers.

Kara has woven a thick and nuanced plot, finally exploring chronic illness in a way that represents the experiences of thousands of people, while also taking you on a totally unexpected journey. Scarlett has recently lost her Aunt and is still trying to process her murder but knows she wants a special funeral for her.The apartment upstairs is nothing less than the same as her older books, if not more because of a queer representation and chronic illness issues.

After the revelation Dee, Euan's ex-girlfriend, starts acting like she should've known all along that something was wrong with him and that he was dangerous. She even decided to introduce some totally pointless references to the global Covid pandemic in the final stages of the book, which added no value at all and were totally unnecessary and avoidable. With strong characters, a good pace and an engaging and enthralling plot that had me guessing, this is a book that I devoured quickly and one which I have no hesitation in recommending to those who enjoy a character-driven, gripping thriller. Lesley Kara tells a brilliantly creative tale about loss and heartache and just as you are in a comfortable place she turns things around, revealing that there is so much more to this story than you initially imagined. Thanks go to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and NetGalley for enabling me to read The Apartment Upstairs and share my views.Dee and Lindsay's relationship is an interesting one to watch play out, often long-term friends will put up with much more from each other than they would from a newer friend. The characters are a diverse lot, but all very interesting and all play their part in building the plot up to a dramatic conclusion, which I definitely didn’t see coming!
