The kits themselves are entirely legal, and fitting them to your bike is equally so. However, the question of legality arises in relation to where you then plan to use your newly powered electric bike. The answer will vary hugely, depending on where in the world you're based, and which kit you choose. Some customers are rightly worried about the extra weight and wiring on the motor wheel should they have to do a puncture repair by the side of the road. The DWG22C is heaviest at 4kgs, 60NM and is good for very hilly terrains, cargo bikes and riders over 16st. There are a lot and you can even get confused at once, but we will consider everything in sequence. A do-it-yourself path to an ebike but does it make sense to take on?

Mid-Drive Conversion is the technology that the best e-bikes tend to use. A weight sits at a low point on the bike frame, and the power is applied to the crank. These can be more expensive, but the technology is typically better. There’s no standardization, however, which can make figuring out exactly what you need to make your bike work a little more challenging. Adding the parts is also a bit more complex than friction drive conversion. You can achieve the same power as a 48v battery but with a low current (amps). I did this with my Bafang conversion, and I had over 2000 miles of trouble-free use. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to get started. You’ll need a laptop or desktop PC, a USB programming lead and a copy of the free Bafang config tool.
