Description

RS PRO straight flute hand tap are manufactured from HSS (high speed steel), offering a durable and reliable selection of tools suitable for a range of thread sizes. I have attached a drawing of another piece of equipment, could you have a look at it and quote for me. Threading Taps are available in HSS (high-speed steel) and carbide and can be used by hand or machine. Dies are used to cut threads on materials such as steel rods to allow a fitting to be screwed on and attached (threading).

Recommended Drill Bit Sizes for Taps and Forming Taps

So, if we wanted to drill a hole for our example bolt, we would need to use a drill that is smaller than 4 mm. Threading taps are a tool used to create screw threads (tapping) into a pre-drilled hole, to create a clean fitting for bolts in metals and plastics. Used in engineering and manufacturing, threading taps work like a drill but due to the unique shape of a tap, when screwed into a piece of material, screw threads are created. Hand tap sets are hand tools designed for thread cutting in holes into various materials such as steel allowing you to create a smooth and precise thread for bolts and other materials.

This formula works for both metric and imperial units, and for all 60-degree threads (all ISO, DIN, UTS, UNC, UNS, and UNF bolts). For smooth and precise thread cutting, a wrench tool is more suitable, whereas a power tool is suited to rapid thread cutting.

The difference between taps and dies is that taps are used to create or repair threads in holes which is ideal for nuts. As a consequence the development of taps corresponded to this standardisation ensuring enhanced compatibility. RS PRO straight flute, taper taps are available in a range of sizes from M2 to M20, offering a wide choice to suit various tasks. Depending on the type of tap being used and the applications, many can be used with a tap wrench or power tool. The taper tap features a smooth diameter transition that allows for a less aggressive cutting action. Most taps are also available as Long Taper, Long Second and Long Plug as well as Spiral Point, Spiral Flute, and Fluteless. They also feature a blue stream tempered finish helping to reduce friction and produce a cleaner thread. If the taper needs to go first, the intermediate tap follows second and the thread is finished with the bottoming tap. Bottom taps are square in profile with no ground down threads and are used after a taper or plug tap has been used.

Spiral flute taps – for blind hole applicationsSpiral point taps – push chips forward, ideal for through-hole applicationsStraight flute taps – most commonly, designed for short chipping materialsForming taps – compresses to produce a thread rather than cuttingTaps come in both Metric and Imperial dimensions and can have different shank types. To create a thread properly, one would need a set of three taps that correspond to the same bit size; namely the bottoming, the intermediate, and the taper tap. Please complete the purchase (or remove the quote – don't worry it's still available in My Account) before adding these additional items. The “M” indicates the “metric diameter” of its thread (see tap drill chart below), which in our case is 4 mm. These versatile hand taps also feature a blue stream tempered finish that reduces friction and produces a fine finish on the threads.
