Meanwhile Glenlivet’s 18 year old expression brings forth an equally inviting flavour profile that is equally as unique. On the nose Glenlivet reveals sweet sultanas, Sherried peels, barley sugars, toasty cereals and floral petals along with a hint of apple blossom; all further complemented by subtle notes of fudge coupled with delicate wisps of smoke! On the palate Glenlivet offers Manuka honey, walnut, Cox’s apples and orange peels; all rounded off with fragrant notes of spicy oak on the lingering finish. The Glenlivet 18 also boasts a luxuriously creamy texture that makes it ideal for sipping.

When selecting my favourite, I find myself reaching for Glenlivet’s 15-year-old expression. Not only does this whisky boast a long-standing reputation as an iconic producer of premium Scotch, but its rich and oaked nose with notes of chewy resinous wood balanced by a well-balanced acidity is sure to impress even the most seasoned connoisseurs. Furthermore, Glenlivet’s 15 year old has been matured in French Limousin oak casks adding a depth of flavour that is simply unparalleled. Nose: Baked apple pie, with lots of cinnamon and brown sugar. The citrus/brine notes on the nose of the 12 do not make an appearance, but are replaced by a more mature, spiced scent. Very fruity. Fresh pears are here, too, with bananas and burnt vanilla. A complex nose. For me, this marks the highlight of the experience. Conclusions:

This has been part of my struggle: I very much use my own crazy system. I score a whisky in 5 categories out of 6.5 (being perfect). So the max a whisky can score in my book is 32.5

Nose (undiluted): Though the nose is a bit understated, the sherry cask influence is evident with dried fruits, but with more brightness than the raisins and dates profile I typically associate with sherried whisky. Dried cranberries and raisins perhaps. Cherries. Vanilla frosting, icing sugar, oak.The Glenlivet 18 year old whisky is a rich and full-bodied spirit with a well-balanced profile that combines the best of Glenlivet’s unique distillation process. On the nose, Glenlivet 18 year old whisky has strong, complex aromas of chewy sultanas, Sherry-soaked peels, barley sugars, toasty grains, and faint wisps of smokiness. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). The Glenmorangie 10 whisky is a complex and delightful dram, with a nose of tart lemon, juicy nectarine, crisp apple, and subtle spice. The addition of first-and-second-fill American white oak casks gives Glenmorangie 10 its unique character. The whisky has a luxuriously soft mouthfeel that is clean and refreshing, finishing with a subtly sweet flavour that is incredibly smooth. Glenmorangie 10 is bottled at 80 proof / 40%ABV for an intense flavour experience. You are responsible for all activities through your account. George Smith was the first licensed distiller in the parish of The Glenlivet. Tenacious in the face of adversity, he bravely set the tone for future whisky makers.

The Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70 cl

This dram is basically what you'd expect to get from a mature Glenlivet. It's got the smooth, inoffensive every-man qualities that makes the brand so popular, but with the wonderful mature complexity that comes with age. However, I may not buy this one again, at least not for a while. Where I live it is literally double the price of the 12. The 12 is certainly not as good. But is it worth paying double for? Don't get me wrong, it truly is considerably better than the twelve. I've yet to see how the 15 year old French oak measures up, but I digress... Finish: Oaky and short and round. No real fireworks to speak of; it just sort of falls flat and dull. There is apple there but that is about it. The finish is long, warm wave of malt and peat, with a return of the sherry smoke. Alongside that, the spice from the taste continues to keep your tongue tingling for a few minutes as well. The water we use comes from Josie’s Well, a natural spring that bubbles out of The Glenlivet’s dark earth. In the mash tun, the enzymes developed during the malting process convert the starch in the malt into sugar. The clear, sugary liquid produced by mashing is known as ‘wort’. FERMENTATION Glenlivet 12 also provides tremendous value for its price range, offering an alluring nose of apricot, pineapple, greengages and citrus blossom complemented by a velvety texture on the palate. The whisky is aged for 12 years in European and American oak barrels which impart it with signature oaky flavours. At the end of its journey, Glenlivet 12 leaves you with a tantalising mix of toasty oak, malt, sweet-tart red apple, and hints of vanilla that linger on your tongue long after every sip.Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. After considering all the expressions from Glenmorangie vs Glenlivet, Glenmorangie is my overall winner. It’s complex with subtle flavours and incredibly well rounded. It’s like an old school, polite and friendly gentleman with exceptional manners. Glenlivet 18 yrs has won prizes and is one of the classic Speyside drams, so I do know that many people like it very much. I guess it just doesn't fit in my palate like the great ones (and of course, over 80 points isn't bad, I was just expecting a score closer to 90). We carefully select combinations of casks made from European oak and American oak to give each expression its unique characteristics.

Glenlivet 18 year old was bit of an disappointment after my great experiences with the 12YO. It was surprisingly robust for its age, though that wasn't necessarily the key factor for disappointment. The Duke of Gordon, landlord to the Glenlivet and wider Speyside region, was aware of the illicit distillation being performed on his extensive land. Instead of missing tax from these ‘moonshiners’ he levied a bill titled ‘The Excise Act’ of 1823, which therefore made alcohol distillation legal. On the other hand Glenlivet 12 year old offers a lighter style than Glenmorangie 10, with distinct notes of citrus, honeycomb, sweet almond and subtle hints of smoke on the palate. Although Glenlivet 12 is slightly cheaper than Glenmorangie 10, it cannot compete with the latter in terms of complexity and richness. Glenlivet 18 year old whisky has been aged in a combination of American ex-bourbon cask and European ex-sherry cask made from American and European oak which impart additional complexity to the whisky. A smaller amount of Glenlivet is also placed in American-made ex-Sherry casks for extra flavour before being finished in new French Limousine oak from Dordogne for its final maturation stage. This careful aging process ensures that Glenlivet 18 year old whisky has achieved its perfect balance after spending at least 18 years in oak barrels before it is bottled and shipped to its final destination. Many different foods pair well with the Glenlivet. It blends well with salmon, smoked fish, and pork thanks to its light flavour and gentle complexity. The taste is silky caramel, with a rich mix of pears and apples juxtaposed with cinnamon and warm oak. Subsequent sips bring out some honey and hints of sherry. More complex than I expected, but not overly so - and it is significantly richer than you would expect from the nose. Despite being slightly higher ABV than the other two it is still incredibly light but it is on a good way and it’s also very warming and soothing at the same time.
