Professor Gunstone is now Emeritus Professor. Previously he was Professor of Science and Technology Education, and Director (and founder) of the Monash-King's College (London) International Centre for the Study of Science and Mathematics Curriculum. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and a Life Member of the Science Teachers' Association of Victoria. He has extensive research, development and consultancy experience in learning, teaching, curriculum, assessment, and teacher development, in school and undergraduate science, physics, engineering (and to a lesser extent medicine) contexts. Aligned with national science standards and high school science curricula, topics cover all major areas of science, such asphysical science, life science, earth and space science, and technology. Alphabetically arranged entries and full-color photos provide a user-friendly format that makes the broad scope of information easy to access and decipher. Entries typically describe scientific concepts, provide overviews of scientific subjects, and define terms.

Two of its reprintings (in 1995, augmented in 1999) featured an appendix listing corrections and addenda; and a separate CD-ROM version, which added over 65,000 words to the original text (see Introduction to the CD-ROM Edition), also appeared in 1995 from Grolier Electronic Publishing as Grolier Science Fiction: the Multimedia Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. We are pleased and grateful that despite its then being very much a work in progress, this third edition of the encyclopedia won the 2012 British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Nonfiction, the 2012 European SF Society award as Best Promoter (of the sf genre) and the 2012 Hugo for Best Related Work.
