Description

I’ve always said, the Dungeon Master is the whole world except for his players, and as a result, I spend countless hours prepping for my home group. As with language, acknowledging that a concept such as alignment is dependent on personal history and not biology is a respectable move, plus, it alligns with the changing mindsets held at modern tables, that our characters tend to be more grey than a nine-point chart can categorise. To start with, no race has an Ability Score Increase anymore, though this has often been supplemented with an additional Trait, such as with the Duergar who, while loosing their +1 to Strength, gain Psionic Fortitude, giving them advantage on Saving Throws against being Charmed or Stunned. For the past few years, questions about Dungeons and Dragons' handling of race have circulated, as the portrayal of certain races as inherently evil has raised real-world concerns. While many Race Traits were previously limited by your character’s Level (such as the Necrotic Shroud of a Fallen Aasimar), many have now been swapped for the character’s Proficiency Bonus instead.

It is also a replacement book for two older supplements – Volo's Guide to Monsters (2016) and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (2018). We use necessary cookies to allow our site to function correctly and collect anonymous session data. I don’t have any of the Tome of Beasts books; my understanding is that some of the monsters in them are interesting, and since they’re less familiar, they’re good for surprising jaded players with, but the CRs on them were pulled out of a bingo cage.

As you go through the book, you’re going to find some monsters where at first you’re like, ‘I know this one! Monsters of the Multiverse will consolidate these versions of playable goblins alongside the monstrous versions of goblins and related goblinoid creatures. And, yet again, the entire rest of the description mentions repeatedly that the book is updates and bringing together existing material from into one book. No alternate cover exists (unless you count the one from the Rules Expansion Gift Set), so you don't need to worry about missing a prettier version. Plus, these terms and abilities aren’t just removed, leaving a gaping hole where a trait or piece of lore used to be.

Monsters of the Multiverse was included on Kotaku's 2022 "The 10 Best Tabletop Roleplaying Books Of 2022" list — Claire Jackson commented that both the updated monsters and player race options make Monsters of the Multiverse a contender for "fourth core book". This change is a real mixed bag, and it’s the one area in which I have some reservations about Monsters of the Multiverse, but it does have one indisputable benefit: It cuts back on the supermarket fatigue generated by long lists of spells.I’m hoping the release of the new Starter Kit later this year is a prediction of an incoming wave of new players, and that this balancing is a kind rolling out of the safety net. Speaking to Polygon, Dungeons and Dragons Principal Rules Designer Jeremy Crawford also stated that the book will highlight the history of certain races, which has largely been glossed over in other material. Or maybe they’re not a caster at all, and the interior of their prison contains a bas relief spelling out a secret weakness of the imprisoning caster, allowing the imprisoned PC to continue participating via learning this secret in pieces during their turns.

It’s an approach to releasing new content that the company has not attempted before in 5th edition, and this time, it looks to have backfired, effectively gating off this new content for a period of time unless you’re willing to pay a premium. The types that were originally detailed in Volo’s are as follows; Orc Blade of Ilneval, Orc Claw of Luthic, Orc hand of Yurtrus, Orc Nurtured One of Yurtus, and Orc Red Fang of Shargaas. They will explain their origin as Fae creatures, how they were conquered by Maglubiyet, and how they were turned into a force of evil in multiple places across the multiverse. It's been explained that this is a decision to allow readers to approach any of the races without preconceived notions, or feel that if they want their character to be from a certain place, or act a certain way they don't need to jump through hoops to justify why that would be possible. Since I do happen to be pushing a book of tactical recommendations based on the stat blocks as they appear in Volo’s and Mordenkainen’s, I’m sure readers are wondering (a) what I think of the changes in Multiverse and (b) whether my tactical recommendations hold up after the changes.
