Description

As in Krasnov's novel, the Russian characters dress in traditional costumes; the men grow the traditional long beards while the women braid their hair; and all of the characters speak in a pseudo-folksy way meant to evoke the Russian of the 16th and 17th centuries. A system, as described in the novel, based on paranoia and arbitrary brutality with the blessing of an ultranationalist Orthodox Church. Od Kine do Pariza vodi autoput sa 11 traka i nekoliko podzemnih pruga koje kontroliše Gospodar Rusije kako mu je volja (po Zakonu, tj. From there Komiaga conducts other seemingly routine activities: he investigates an artist penning inflammatory poetry about the Tsarina, visits a book-burning clairvoyant, ingests a fish that lays hallucinogenic eggs in his brain, and finally participates in ritualistic group sex and self-torture with his fellow Oprichniki.

In the 1980s, he was a religious-minded dissenter against Communism who became a nationalist philosopher after the embarrassment of 1989. In Sorokin’s near future, a Western Wall separates Russia from the teeming and declassé continent of Europe, from “stench and unbelievers, from sodomites, Catholics, melancholiacs”—and above all from cyberpunks, who seem to be a problem. However, today, in 2023, the novel does not seem a joke - what it describes - the Wall isolating the biggest country in the world from the 'rotting' Western world, monarchy supported by Oprichnina, the powerful political police from the 16th century, hypocrisy, massive corruption, the population devoted to mythical archaic values, living in the past and believing in the unique 'mission' the nation has, etc. Responding to protests that Ivan was one of the most bloodthirsty and autocratic rulers in recorded history, the regional governor is quoted in a Guardian report saying the fearsome tsar was a great monarch and preserver of the Orthodox faith, “a defender of our land, a tsar who expanded its frontiers” and who did not let other nations encroach on them. At one point there's a giant homosexual-penetration scene where they become a caterpillar of penetration. The title of the book is a reference to the 1962 novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. During his morning routine Komiaga considers the value of the ruble against the yuan, but he thinks hardly at all about the United States.

The Oprichniki drive cars with heads of dogs impaled on the hoods alongside brooms, the symbols of the Oprichnina of Ivan the Terrible. Mogo me je podsećao na Juvenala, verovatno zato što je on opisivao Neronovo vreme sa sličnim gnušanjem i sarkazmom kao što Sorokin opisuje Putinovo, ili nekog poput njega. The most notable distinguishing marks of the vory are that their bodies are covered with elaborate tattoos full of symbolism about their status within the vory v zakone and that they always wear Orthodox crucifixes around their necks. The tricky thing here is that on the one hand, Sorokin seems to work with many, many references to classic Russian literature that, let's not kid ourselves, I miss.

This is in response to a Russian author and his verse, which consists mostly of coughs, quacks, and interjections. Sorokin told an interviewer he composed Day of the Oprichnik in a single month “like an uninterrupted stream of bile,” as part of a conscious decision to become more politicized in his writing.

The plot is structured around one day in the life of Andrej Danilowitsch Komjaga, who, as the narrator, takes us along for a day in his life as a Oprichnik, so a member of the elite unit that helps to keep the state running by means of, you know, murder, rape, violence, degradation, fear, and general ruthlessness - if that rings a bell, it's probably because people tend to mysteriously disappear and / or die in Russia if they dare to speak up. On the contrary, this short and savage offering puts the “dys” in dystopian in a way few novels bearing that label can claim. Everything that is used in Russia is manufactured in China leading characters to bemoan "We make children on Chinese beds! More suited to adventurous minds, keen to wander off the beaten track and question everything they know, let alone read.In Krasnov's novel, a recurring themes is a dream that occurs in the mind of the hero where he sees a beautiful girl threatened by the zmei gorynych, the monstrous three-headed dragon of Russian mythology. als großem Vorbild, die Abschottung vom Westen, die Hinwendung zu China, der latente Antisemitismus, die ausgreifenden Korruption vor allem in höchsten Kreisen. Sveltely devastating full-fanged fisting of a Putinesque oligarchy, run by murdering, plundering bandits with a penchant for conga lines of sodomy.

In Sorokin's novel, Komyaga, under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs imagines himself and all of the other Oprichniki merging their bodies together to turn into a zmei gorynych.A number of far-right commentators in America have fallen in love with Dugin’s calm-voiced hatred for Western liberalism, and a great deal of Republican admiration for Russia as a Christian, white-dominated state can be traced to his ideas. This Russian-nationalist dream is not just Aleksandr Dugin’s; it’s shared by many rich and frustrated people in Putin’s circle. Lovers of history, sociology and politics will all find fascinations to plunge into, but don’t baulk if none of that fires your blood. The neo-medieval enforcer's morning sees him murder a boyar (nobleman) and join in the gang-rape of his wife, a task he justifies to himself as important work. Much of the style of the book is a satire of the Socialist Realist style as Komyaga has to perform a quest of sorts to uphold the power of the state and annihilate his own identity over the course of a 24-hour period.
