Description

The tape is summer of 1984 sisters are putting on a play. Daisy’s heart stopped again that day. Conor‘s father was in the tape as well, as he became close to Nancy. The tape also contains a scene from 1985. Lily‘s hair is cut short and Daisy admits to the reader that she cut it all off while Lily slept because she was jealous that Lily was Nancy’s favorite daughter.

The house is cut off from all but boat access during high tide. If you’re not a seagoing kind of person, tides are actually super-interesting, caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. In any case, high tides happen roughly twice in a 24 hour period, about twelve hours apart. Same with low tides. The time between each high and low is roughly six hours. Today I’m so excited to be bringing you my review for Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney, a book I read this month with some buddies from TWR, and a book that surprised and enthralled me throughout. Based on the fact that none of the Alice Feeney books I’ve read had paranormal elements, I did NOT see that twist coming, even though I’ve seen (and loved) movies where that twist was used. From the #1 bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere, comes one of the most highly anticipated books of the year – the inspiring new novel about a mother’s unbreakable love in a world consumed by fear.

Be SURE that you read the note from the Author’s agent in the beginning of the book both BEFORE you start and AFTER you finish. You won’t understand it till then, and it just might make you revisit the early chapters of the story to see what you MISSED!! Daisy Darker’s family were as dark as dark can be, when one of them died all of them lied and pretended not to see . . . Talk about intriguing. I was enamored by the plot and the rhyming sections about Daisy and her family. Speaking of Daisy, she is the narrator of this story. She is also Nana's favorite. What a story this is! Plus, that twist!!!!!! You will have to read to find out what that is. I was thoroughly enjoying the book the whole way through and then Feeney blew my mind! But if I do know more than most, it’s because I read. Books will teach you anything you want to know, and they tend to be more honest than people.” ASPECTS RATING

Need Help?

The narrator, Daisy, was born with a heart condition that totals several times she died, but successfully resuscitated. She reveals the secrets and gives insight to each character as suspicions rise over the course of the book. The beauty, strength and audacity of her beautiful sisters will have you feeling sorrow for her and her weaknesses. The family is stranded in a coastal mansion on the Cornish coast--the setting is dark, moody, and sinister, adding a layer of creepiness to the events. Don’t waste your life wishing to be like someone else, decide who you are and be you.” FINAL THOUGHTS AND RATING A twisting, pulse-pounding thriller from Freida McFadden, the New York Times bestselling author of The Housemaid and The Coworker

The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. Then at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows . . . What was the draw of the isolated island location? How did it contribute to the story? The locale was everything. Aside from being integral to the plot (no one could get on or off), the isolation fostered extreme camaraderie between its inhabitants over the years. In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.” Creepy events: If you know me, you know I love good atmosphere in a book, and that sometimes comes from spooky or creepy events. Now this wasn’t a “bump in the night”, “omg someone is in the house” kind of spooky but so much more subtle. There are lots of word games in the writing style to start with and I feel like the flow and style already makes the book very atmospheric. The author really has a way with words and uses this talent in the poems and rhymes that can be found throughout this story. The main one is also featured as the first line of the blurb (although its a lot longer and spookier in full) and there are lots more that really made my skin crawl and my blood run cold. You definitely get the feeling that something sinister is happening and that it is an outside force that is the reason for everything happening. As such a word nerd, I really enjoyed the rhymes and the poems, they worked so well in the overall plot and helped everything come together. For Daisy Darker, however, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with her family and, perhaps, to find out the truth. But Conor said that Daisy would have died soon anyway, because of her heart condition. He suggested they cover up their involvement by throwing Daisy over the cliff. Rose and Lily agree that this is the only choice. They fling her off the edge of the cliff into the sea.

THANK YOU ALICE FEENEY FOR GETTING ME OUT OF MY BOOK SLUMP!!! Ms. Feeney proves, with her lyrical prose and well described characters, that you don’t need overly descriptive gore and violence to deliver a great thriller!!!A new tape shows up with letters that say “hear me.” The tape depicts Christmas 1982, with Frank bringing gifts for everyone. Final twist 1: I read And Then There Were None... I remember the ending... To compare Daisy Darker to this classic is a spoiler in the blurb! So, yes, I was expecting the culprit to be a fake victim (and my money was on Nana since the beginning). Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old.
