The 1993 album features the singles ‘From Despair To Where’, ‘La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)’ and ‘Roses in the Hospital’. Can't relate to the earlier reviews at all, this remaster sounds great on my system, low end is lovely, I can feel the bass, just how I like it. We’ve been learning the songs over the last few weeks and we might play some of them at festivals,” Wire told NME. This was one of the most obvious hints at what would be Richey Edward's lasting legacy: a sadness and loneliness which was to cripple him to the point of despair. The B-side ‘Comfort Comes’ is definitely the bridge to ‘The Holy Bible’, but interestingly the demo of the title track of ‘Gold Against The Soul’ is very ‘The Holy Bible’,” said Wire.

He added that the album was "heavy, melodic and packed full of huge choruses: radio-friendly doesn’t have to be used in the pejorative sense and it's certainly more considered and mature than their debut. Gold Against the Soul is the second studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. While i can say without a shade of doubt that this is not the best sounding record in my collection, yet i still manage to listen this version without giving me an headache due to excessive dynamic range compression. The band privileged long guitar riffs and the drums feel more present and loud in the final mix of the album. The latter publication, in a retrospective review of The Holy Bible, looked back on Gold Against the Soul as "an underrated pop-metal effort that's armed with a handful of bona-fide big tunes", and cited " La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" as its highlight. The fourth and final single, " Life Becoming a Landslide", charted at number 36, which would be the lowest charting single by the band until 2011's " Some Kind of Nothingness". There’s an amazing batch of demos that are quite revealing – some of them are really confused versions of what ended up on the album. Nostalgic Pushead' is yet more evidence of high budget, yet for all that, it seems to lack soul, and much of this album does not replicate the same Joie De Vivre as GT, but this zeal would soon be found again on their next album. The album has often divided opinion among fans and critics due to its decadent glam-rock sound and approach.

It felt like we were gorging on a lot of American rock in particular, whereas [seminal 1994 album] ‘The Holy Bible’ was all our British influences and new wave. The book only contains photos: I would have loved to hear from the band why they're so ambivalent about the album, but there are no interviews or new essays to help shed light on the album at all. When I found that demo and played it to James, he was shocked as well at how it fitted in with our later post-punk ideas. The b-sides and the demos aren't quite as mangled in the mastering process as the actual album and the book is decent enough for what it is. Nicky Wire spoke of the reissue, acknowledging that it hasn’t always been a band favourite: “ We moved our studio a few years ago and I unearthed a lot of demos and pictures from the ‘Gold Against The Soul’ era and thought it would be a shame not to let them see the light of day.
