Brut ( French pronunciation: [bʁyt]) is a brand name for a line of men's grooming and fragrance products marketed around the world by Unilever - except in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Latin America, where it is owned by High Ridge Brands Company; and in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, where it is owned by Pharmacare Laboratories. Apart from some regions, Unilever sells Brut around the world, with big markets in the United Kingdom, France and the Far East. Australia produces its own Brut aftershave, which is purported to have a slightly different scent. In Brazil, there is a Brut-branded lather shaving cream in a tube, with the classic Brut fragrance. While benzene is not an ingredient in any of the recalled products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can," the company said. But it added that there have been no reports of adverse events related to the recall, which is being conducted out of an "abundance of caution."

Brut was launched in 1964 by the American firm Fabergé Inc. and has been owned since 1990 by the British multinational company Unilever. A sixth recalled product was sold only in Canada: Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (154g) (UPC 00827755070177). In 2003, Unilever divested the rights to the brand in several countries - in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Latin America, the rights were acquired by Helen of Troy Limited [1] - for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, the rights were acquired by PharmaCare Laboratories. Five of TCP's recalled products are: Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (4 oz) (UPC 00827755070085); Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (6 oz) (UPC 000827755070108); Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (10.0 oz) (UPC 00827755070047); Sure Regular Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002025); Sure Unscented Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz) (UPC 00883484002278). Similar recalls have been issued for other consumer products that surprisingly contained benzene in the past six months: Pantene/Herbal Essence dry spray shampoos; Old Spice spray deodorants; and Neutrogena/Aveeno spray sunscreens.
