Right from the off, it's clear that a lot of time and effort has been pumped into The Journey. This is a mode that could have very easily ended up being a complete cringe-fest, but it actually feels authentic to some degree. Indeed, there's a surprising air of realism here in the storytelling; yes, it's obviously dramatised, but it's hard not to become immersed in Alex's potential rise to Premier League fame. It certainly helps that it features some decent voice acting from a range of supporting characters, even if the dialogue can sound like it's trying a bit too hard to be down with the kids at times. Yin-Poole, Wesley (12 June 2016). "FIFA 17 has a story mode with a Mass Effect-style dialogue wheel". Eurogamer. Archived from the original on 2 October 2018 . Retrieved 12 June 2016. It can be frustrating at times, especially when you think your player is going to curl the ball into the top corner and he instead smashes it over the bar, but there’s nothing more satisfying than successfully finessing a long-range shot and have it nestle in the corner of the net.

EA Sports announced at E3 2016 that they will have all 20 Premier League managers' likenesses in the game. [7] New goal celebrations, such as Paul Pogba's ' Dab' and Mesut Özil's 'M' celebration, feature in the game. [8] [9] If you’re familiar with the slow pace, defensive focus and intricate button combos of FIFA 16, you’ll feel right at home with 17. If you’re coming from PES, then things might feel a bit complicated. In PES 2017, things happen naturally. The game cleverly knows if you’re trying to dink the ball over the top of defenders with the outside of your foot. In FIFA, you have to do all this for yourself. It sounds odd at first having a single-player campaign in a football game that isn’t completely about management, but it’s hardly something new. 2K has been at it for years with its MyCareer mode in the NBA series, with the mode becoming increasingly popular with each iteration. Spike Lee even directed last year’s version. FIFA 16 review | GamesRadar". gamesradar.com. 22 September 2015. Archived from the original on 14 October 2015 . Retrieved 2 February 2017.

The mode is broken down into three distinct sections: games, training and cut-scenes. The games are self-explanatory, just typical FIFA matches with the odd tinker to make them fit into the story dynamic. You can either control the whole team or, like in Be A Pro, just control Alex. a b "Dortmund's Marco Reus wins vote to feature on FIFA 17 cover". ESPN. 21 July 2016. The broad, round-shouldered players of last year are gone, replaced by models that look much more like actual human beings. With better likenesses, including all 20 Premier League managers, in visual terms FIFA 17 is a clear step ahead of its biggest rival. Some familiar FIFA annoyances rear their ugly head again – notably the pesky referees. Penalties are given for the slightest touch in the box, and yellow (and red) cards are handed out seemingly for challenges that shouldn’t even warrant a stop in play.

Speaking of Career, the managerial side of things has seen some slight alterations this year. For starters, you can now choose the look of your manager from a selection of preset models. Naturally, most of them look like grumpy older geezers, but it's a welcome addition nonetheless, and it means that you don't appear totally out of place next to existing Premier League coaches, who, by the way, are now fully modelled in-game. And yes, it goes without saying that a good number of them look like really creepy animatronic waxworks. In many ways it’s a resounding yes, but FIFA and PES are now more different than ever, and that’s a good thing. Penalties are a different story, and I actually much prefer the changes there. You can alter your run-up and there’s much more control. It takes some getting used to, though. For all the adjustments and additions that don’t quite work, you can hardly accuse EA Sports of not trying. Some might argue that the new systems for set-pieces and penalties are changes for change’s sake. But while I did wonder if having to adjust your position in the run-up to penalties might be a needless complication of what should be a simple process, I’m sure plenty will appreciate the greater nuance – and, admittedly, it does add to the pressure. All told, there’s still plenty of room for improvement, but the on-pitch action is an advance on last year.Moving swiftly on from the apparent killer android that is FIFA 17's version of Jurgen Klopp, you're now expected to manage the business aspect of your chosen club as well as the team when playing as a manager. At the start of your career, you'll be presented with typical objectives such as domestic and continental success, but you'll also need to keep an eye on profits from shirt sales and give a thought to developing your youngsters. On paper, managing your club as a whole seems like an interesting idea, but in practice, it rarely amounts to anything more than simply making sure that you have a good season. The story mode is fun, if slightly cliched, and you can simply ignore it if it’s not for you, while Ultimate Team is still as addictive as ever. FIFA 17 review – second place". metro.co.uk. 26 September 2016. Archived from the original on 8 May 2017 . Retrieved 2 February 2017. How about being able to play the ball exactly where you want it to go based on your skill? nope it's like a magnet ball, the same as all the other years. And the passing has a slight delay... Which for any football game lover, such as myself is a cardinal sin.

At the most basic point, The Journey is simply a career mode with some fancy acting and a simple story. That’s far from a bad thing, though.

FIFA 17 Review – VideoGamer.com". videogamer.com. Archived from the original on 4 February 2017 . Retrieved 2 February 2017. On 23 June 2016, EA Sports announced that the J1 League and J.League Cup will be featured in the game for the first time. [10] On 4 September 2016, EA Sports announced at Brasil Game Show 2016 that 18 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A teams will be featured in their respective league ( Corinthians and Flamengo, who signed an exclusivity deal with Konami for Pro Evolution Soccer, do not appear). Five Série B teams are also in the game. The Brazilian teams in the game have generic player names which the user cannot change. [11] Women's teams, who were introduced in FIFA 16, also return, with the Norway women's national football team being added to the series but they removed stadium Camp Nou and added El Libertador in FIFA 17 Essentially, The Journey is Player Career, except you're playing as a preset character with a voice and personality. The campaign itself is split up between training sessions, full competitive matches, and story scenarios as your actions both on and off the pitch determine how successful Alex's career turns out to be. Put in a good performance on a consistent basis and you'll keep your place in the starting eleven, for example, but make too many controversial - or 'fiery', as the game calls them - comments in post-match interviews, and the manager may start having second thoughts, even if the fans on social media think that you're top notch entertainment.
