Physical connectivity is fairly standard here, but apart from the usual RCA and digital inputs, there’s no HDMI or Bluetooth, which may be problematic. And when choosing various AccuVoice modes you might notice a ‘hollowing’ of the lower mids, an issue which may affect the bass content too. In our opinion, there are better soundbases at this price point for overall sound quality; the Denon DHT-T110 comes to mind. But for pure vocal clarity, our money is on the ZVOX.

Connections on the DM55 remain the same as before: you get two digital inputs (optical and coaxial), a pair of RCA analogue inputs, and a subwoofer output. Another minor bum note is Surround mode, which does little to enhance your enjoyment, aside from a gentle widening of the soundstage. It’s fine but you lose the directness of Stereo mode. The DM100 also does a fabulous job with music, thanks to its sophisticated hi-fi approach. The use of separate tweeters, mid-range drivers and subs gives you a lovely full-range sound, delving deep into the low frequencies without sounding tubby and sprinkling music with silky treble. There are big dynamics, focused vocals and a sense of refinement that you simply don’t get from any other soundbase. Should I buy the Canton DM100?The Canton’s huge sound is largely down to its incredibly deep and muscular bass. Play Looper on Blu-ray and every time Joe blows away a victim, the blunderbuss shot has palpable weight, beefed up by those four potent subs.

The whole thing is held together by the DM55’s excellent bass output. There’s a subwoofer pre-out if you have a spare woofer to call into action, but left on its own and the twin in-built drivers prove deep and potent, giving bass-rich moments ample scale and weight without overpowering the other speakers. The thud and hum of lightsabers in a forest clash is tight and beefy, and when the final act plays host to some truly destructive sequences this 2.1-channel soundbase has the presence to match. The built-in subwoofer can turn your movies from weak, boring watches to powerful, immersive booming hits which rival the magic of the cinema. 180° speaker technology will fill the entire room, so whether you’re huddled on the sofa or spread about on your own beanbags and chairs, not a single word or sound will be missed by anyone. As I mention in my review, there are various EQ parameters to try to account for different mounting arrangements, but none account for placing the unit above the screen and firing the sound "downwards", if you see what I mean. And yes, it is also genuinely room-filling, albeit mostly in front of you. There is height and width, but nothing behind. I don't know if this helps, but this is the best offer I've seen online: If the issue persists, you might prefer to add an external subwoofer (in which case the DM100 rolls off low frequencies at 80Hz) – it’s great that Canton gives you the option. However, with judicious tweaking most people should be perfectly happy with the Canton’s built-in subs. Once properly integrated, bass sounds fast and agile, starting and stopping on a dime.

The Canton DM 75 is a soundbar that offers a powerful audio experience with its 2.1 channel output and a RMS rated power of 200W. It is equipped with audio decoders such as Dolby Digital and DTS, ensuring high-quality sound reproduction. The soundbar features a crossover frequency of 3000Hz, providing a balanced distribution of frequencies for optimal audio performance. One of the secrets of Canton’s success is that it takes a hi-fi approach to its speaker design. The DM55 uses separate tweeters, midrange drivers and woofers for each channel (six drivers in total) powered by a 200W amplifier This voice boost technology is perfect for helping you to hear the dialogue which falls between scenes, which can sometimes feel very mumbled and fuzzy. Yet, it can be some of the most important scene input. You won’t have to reach for the remote to turn the volume up and then be blown away with the next scene or when the adverts come on. Plus, there are adjustable lip sync settings so you can get it as close to reality as possible. There’s no doubting the Canton DM75 is an excellent soundbase – we gave it an Award after all – but with the introduction of some fresh new rivals, there are now some things that put its fifth star on shaky ground.

They can also offer distinct advantages for smaller rooms that don’t have the space from multiple speakers, or when you don’t want to bother with wires. Ultimately, as with many things in home audio, everything is a trade-off. Do you want full surround sound? Or do you want a slightly smaller audio stage, in exchange for crazy convenience? That being said, there are certain sound bases that allow you to add additional speakers into the mix. Perfect example: the Sonos Playbase, which is one of the many reasons why it’s at number one. It lets you connect additional, smaller speakers – as long as they are from the same manufacturer, of course - and in addition, to do it wirelessly. Huzzah! The deep bass rumbles with warmth and aggression, lending satisfying weight to punches and explosions while also being agile, taut and spirited when streaming heavy blues tunes from Spotify. One notable feature of the Canton DM 75 is the inclusion of a subwoofer, providing an immersive low-frequency sound reproduction. This addition enhances the listening experience by delivering powerful and impactful bass. To access the advanced sound settings, hold down the “play mode” or “sound” buttons and use the volume keys to turn them on and off. The setup menu is predictably basic on the three-digit display, but it’s better than the cryptic flashing lights used by other soundbases.
