Philips says these models will use a “high quality” VA panel for wider viewing angles, and a wide colour gamut that hits 95% of the DCI-P3 spectrum for accurate colours. Full speed ahead with next-gen gaming While it doesn't offer the self-emitting pixels of OLEDor Micro LED panels, it should help LCD televisions continue to compete in the TV space, for those without the cash or desire for more premium technologies. You'll find Mini LED tech in both LG's new QNEDrange and the higher-end new Samsung TVscoming out this year too. For those with more mid-spec budgets or tastes, though, there will still be a host of more traditional LCDs to consider. The Philips OLED+936 has the identical OLED panel and processor set-up as the 986 above. It's the form factor and speaker system that differ.

The 9206 is armed with a 100Hz VA panel for wide viewing angles. It features Philips’ Micro Dimming Pro system, but we’d expect the performance is less impactful than the Mini LEDs. That’ll likely be true of the picture engine too, which loses the AI processing and the ability to upscale SDR images to HDR. It only has three-sided Ambilight so you don't get the full four-sided effect elsewhere but it's a reasonable concession to make for the price.Philips’ TV App collection is left out, though we can’t imagine many will be crestfallen by that. There is VRR but no eARC or an auto low latency mode. The downside of OLED is its potential longevity, as it's an organic material that can decay and it's typically can't reach the peak brightness of LED panels - which means that HDR effects can be greater from a LED-based panel. All of the 805’s connections are located at the left rear of the display, including four HDMI 2.0b inputs whose only HDMI 2.1 feature is ALLM (Auto Low-Latency Mode), which switches the TV into a low-latency mode when compatible consoles are in use. For ALLM to work, you first have to turn on ‘Auto Game Mode’ in the user menu. Philips’ first Mini LED TV is the 9635. Like the OLED+ series it gets an integrated 3.1.2 B&W Atmos sound system. DTS Play-Fi covers Hi-Res audio support and multi-room capabilities.

Google TV is on board as the smart UI, having finally switched over from the less intuitive Android TV, with a simplified menu structure to make it less overwhelming to set up. What’s even more impressive is how three-dimensionally the anti-hero is rendered compared to the same scene on the other sets. The harsh spotlighting in the dingy Sister Margaret's dive bar can look clumsy and blunt but Philips’ picture processing is able to recognise the scene for what it is and shade Wilson’s face accordingly. With Philips 4 sided Ambilight, every moment feels closer. Intelligent LEDs around the edge of the TV respond to the on-screen action and emit an immersive glow that's simply captivating. Experience it once and wonder how you enjoyed TV without it. Other than the underlying panel technology, Philips' new MiniLED models seem to match their OLED siblings, so it will be fascinating to see which TVs deliver the best overall performance when we test them later in the year. HDMI 2.1 and gaming features Chief among these is the adoption of the full 48Gbps (4:4:4 12 bit) HDMI 2.1 protocol across the new 806 and 856 OLED models. This brings Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM) to two of the four HDMI ports (1 and 2) while eARC is available on port two. Moreover, this full bandwidth implementation of HDMI 2.1 will also be found on the more affordable 706 OLED model which replaces the 705.An additional sixth category has been added in Film detection. Film Detection flags any movie content, giving the viewer the chance to switch to a new Home Cinema Mode, Pure Cinema Mode or Filmmaker Mode. Speaking of Filmmaker Mode, it will be a named picture preset so the viewers can actually select it from the menu. Despite its imperfections, though, the OLED806 still covers the basics pretty well. It commits no major audio crimes and can still convey the emotion in Michael Giacchino’s excellent score when it counts. It’s true lump-in-the-throat stuff as George Kirk steers his ship towards oblivion, listening over comms to the first moments of life of a son he’ll never get to meet. Verdict For the time being, the OLED+935 continues through to 2021 with its successor likely coming in the second half of the year. The OLED+935 has the 4th Gen P5 AI processor with its dedicated AI Machine Learn Sharpness function, and improved versions of the AI Smart Bit Enhancement system and Perfect Natural Reality (PNR) function for upscaling sub-4K images and handling motion. The TV also has the anti-burn that detects logos/static content onscreen to reduce the brightness of those static elements. There’s also DTS Play-Fi too, offering multi-room and High-Res music compatibility, and the set’s audio is provided by a Bowers & Wilkins 3.1.2 Atmos sound system.
