Description

Leaves are noted by their varying size and coloration with white varieties usually lighter in color and having less fall change before dropping than other more highly colored varieties. Leaves may be hairy, like R. oldhamii, or smooth and shiny as many of the Satsuki hybrids in character. Leaves of a few azaleas may curl or twist. Growth & Spread: Ultimate height and spread of 0.5 – 1m. It should take the Azalea 10-20-year to reach this mature growth. Euonymus fortunei ‘Silver Queen’—This cultivar is a variegated shrub with dark green leaves with contrasting white edging and markings. Azaleas—Evergreen flowering shrubs with beautiful foliage, and round growing pattern make them spectacular shrubs for a garden landscape.

Pruning is entirely optional, and I’ve only ever done it for aesthetic purposes or to keep an azalea under control. Stunning double lilac-lavender flowers up to 60mm which last well, flowering in late May. A recent introduction and proving very popular, as this is a different colour to most other azaleas. A neat grower with a fairly upright habit, sometimes semi deciduous foliage. Height 60-80cm in 10 years. A striking plant with brilliant orange flowers with golden upper petal. It flowers about a week earlier than most Exbury type azaleas, so it's lovely in starting the Exbury azalea flowering season in mid May. Height 120-150cm in 10 years. In this picture: Mahonia japonica bush with decorative reddish-purple foliage in winter. The striking broad-leaf, evergreen foliage ensures protection in your garden from wind and noise. Azalea japonicas can and will struggle if the soil stays dry during the summer months. I have seen this with younger specimens but less so with established ones. With intense large violet blue flowers, with deeper purple red spotting this lovely old variety is very hardy. Flowering in May, it has an upright spreading habit with flowers approximately 40-45mm wide. Height 60-80cm in 10 years. An old and very hardy May-flowering variety with large, violet-blue flowers spotted in purple-red. Upright spreading habit reaching only 60-80cm in 10 years. Azalea flowers have five to six stamens, while rhododendron flowers typically have 10 or more stamens Lovely deep yellow double flowers, tinged purplish red flowering in late May. One of Donald Waterer's later hybrids but still rare. Height 150cm in 10 years. Bright scarlet, long-lasting flowers (up to 30mm), which hold their colour well. A good late flowering variety for June. An excellent tough and very hardy plant from Scotland, with a dense low growing habit. Height 40-60cm in 10 years.

Azalea flowers appear in clusters of around three, at the end of a stem, while rhododendron flowers grow together in large 'trusses' The name schlippenbachii is derived from Baron von Schlippenbach, a Russian officer who collected the species in 1854.Semi-double hose-in-hose types (the calyx is fully developed as petals such as the Pericat 'Glory' or 'Sweetheart Supreme') The flowers are borne in clusters of 5–12 together, each flower tubular- funnel-shaped, 3–4 cm (1 1⁄4–1 1⁄2 in) long, with five lobes at the apex; they are pink with a darker blotch at the base of the upper lobe. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer.

Bark chippings and pine needles are perfect mulches for azaleas but avoid pea shingle, slate or stone as these conduct heat. Feed Appreciating moist, well-drained soil, this shrub will also require a frequent water in the warmer months of the year. Spring and Summer is when the Azalea forms its purple flowers, so water in that period to keep them looking great. Partial shade is ideal with shelter also being good for it. Keeping it out of direct sunlight is key as the Azalea will cope better without it.

Raised by noted New Forest Azalea breeder, George Hyde, and recently named by his daughter Rosemary Legrand. Lovely deep pink in bud opening to flesh pink flowers mottled deeper at the edges with a golden flare. Flowering in large trusses of 23 flowers up to 70mm across in May - June. It has bronzy young growth with good autumn colour. Height 150-180cm in 10 years. Watch out for hot patios, walls and pots where the soil could dry out and cause problems, this an issue I have seen first-hand.
